Subject: Re: Foreign language versions
This is my first post though I've been a member of the group for some time
now, limiting myself to reading the posts from the rest of you.
One of the best things I've seen on 'foreign language versions' is a four
disc set put out by Bear Family called "Pop In Germany". It must be heard
to be believed and appreciated. So many great songs done by (mostly) German
artists contemporaneous with the original artists.
Here is a list of all the songs for your viewing. Hey, it even has "Grocer
Jack" done by Curd Borkmann. (Mark, didn't you get your royalty check from
Curd for this one?). Songs by the Kinks, Herman's Hermits, Tremelos,
Rolling Stones, Scott McKenzie, The Herd, Manfred Mann (Pretty Flamingo),
Byrds, Five Tops, Beatles, Beach Boys, The Who, Monkees, and many more. It's
really a wonderful bunch of tunes for anyone who loves this period.....and
all in German and done very well with the sound quality you expect from the
good people at Bear Family.
I also have CDs by Brenda Lee, Leslie Gore and Helen Shapiro all sung in
German. There is some really wonderful stuff around if you know where to go
to get it. Money comes in handy too. As a teenager I often would spend all
my money on records. I actually started before that, buying my first record
in 1957....an Elvis EP which I still treasure. Now I have more music than I
could ever have imagined.
Don Stout,
a hopeless music addict since I first heard The Cheers do "Black Denim
Trousers" 1955. What a song! Leiber/Stoller wrote some fine tunes.

As far as I know, the original version was by the GREAT soul singer
Justine "Baby" Washington. I'd have to check my LP for the song info.
Another version I know of is by Thee Midnighters. I'd like to hear of
other versions-this song is a classic, I've never heard a version
that was anything but good!

And Rashkosky, who likes to save his fingers for more important
things, "I'm going to get one of those it types when you talk programs.
I think all this keyboarding is bad for my putting", replied: (off-
list, but has agreed to me repeating):
Not for nothin', as they say in Brooklyn, and I don't disagree (I need
all the echo God can give me), but I maxed out the back staircase (live
echo) at Roulette on the bridge. That's all it would take before
feedback.
An aside on that. Sometimes, late at night we'd get some very funny
sounds in the echo return. The backstairs were all concrete and steel
and used as a fire exit other than as our live echo.
When we'd check it was usually some drunk trying to break in the street
level doors, but one time there was actually a guy who got in and was
taking a pee down at the bottom where the mike was. Scared the crap out
of me.
Funny memories. Had a lot of fun in that little studio. Did demos with
Little Anthony, Teddy Randazzo, Doris Troy (who brought in Chuck Rainey
--first time I ever saw him) and Paul Vance, etc. Guy Costa who later
ran Motown, LA Studios ran the place and was a great person to work for.

Mostly Italian it seems. Peter, do you have a list? I know of

I hope that you'll forgive me if this has been brought up already,
but Bear Family has done a whole series of discs devoted to
"Amerikaner & Briten singen Deutsch" entiled Tausand Nadelstiche.
I only own two of the eight (or is that nine?) CDs. The first is
essential: Searchers - Tausand Nadelstiche (Needles & Pins); Petula
Clark - Downtown; Brian Hyland - Schön War Die Zeit; The Honeycombs -
Hab Ich Das Recht. 31 tracks in all on this disc.
There is also a book which accompanies the CDs which was written by
Bernd Matheja which includes lots of great photos. The down side of
the book is that, like the recordings, the text is in German only.

Subject: Re: Bonner & Gordon Songs
Dear Spectropoppers,
I have been on this list for a couple of years now, but am stepping out of
lurkedom for the first time. But before I will tell you the reason why I am
doing this, I want to let you all know what a great list this is, with so
many people that have a great knowledge of music. I am learning new things
all the time. Thanks to you all for that.
The reason I am posting, is to add something to the many posts about Gary
Bonner and Alan Gordon. I have been a fan of Bonner/Gordon for many years
and have been collecting their songs for as many years. I would also like to
take the opportunity to thank That Alan Gordon for co-composing some truly
amazing music. Jill, She's My Girl, Girls In Love, Happy Together, Lady
Fingers, You Know What I Mean, to name but a few, are some of the best and
most beautiful songs ever written!!
Fpr the last decade or so, I have been collecting Bonner/Gordon songs and
here's what I found so far. The first part of the list is of songs I have
and know; the second part is of songs I know they exist, but haven't been
able to add to my collection yet (if there are any people on this list that
do have them in their collection: I would love to trade!). I know this list
is far from complete, but at least it's a start for those who wanted to have
a list. I hope there will be an even larger list soon, so I will be able to
start chasing again after those other missing Bonner/Gordon songs.

Jake Holmes has (sort of) recently reactivated his recording career.
In 2001 he put out a wonderful new CD called DANGEROUS TIMES. It
was/is available from (if I remember correctly) either CD Baby or
mp3.com.
Speaking of the latter, he also contributed a song to their multi-

Luis was active in the Miami folk scene in the early 60s, and I
think might have done some recording in Cuba in the late 50s. I
have an album by him in which he does Spanish covers of songs by
the likes of early Paul Anka and Conway Twitty, including a
rockin' "Mona Lisa".

Was listening to an old Artie Wayne-Ben Raleigh song, "Gaucho
Guitar", as recorded by Glenn Darrell on Jamie. It sounds to me
like a pretty obvious attempt to recreate "Dance With The Guitar

question is... who is the girl group that's backing Darrell on the
record?

Have a look in the Spectropop archives Peter, there are some Dora
related postings to be had. There are at least two big Dora fans on
the Spectropop roster and not a few closets I suspect.
But treat yourself today, look here: http://www.dorahall.tvheaven.com/
We're rapidly approaching what would have been Dora's 103 Birthday

That was me. Number eight was actually it's mid-week placing - it's
official placing (after Saturdays sales) was number nine. After that,
like most singles these days, it dropped pretty quickly out of the chart.
I can't remember but it may of only spent two or three weeks in the
top forty. The fact that, these days, many singles are released just two
weeks before the albums that contain them does nothing for chart
longevity though there are plenty of other contributing factors (early
servicing to radio, etc) but I won't get into that debate now.
Anyway, I have a rather tasty promo of the Starsailor album up for
grabs for the first Spectropopper that gets in touch.

Guy

Hi,
Alan Brackett of the PBC posted this message over at the Unofficial
PBC site:
John Merrill and I are thinking of putting out some cds of unreleased
PBC recordings - from the early Ashes through the PBC years and
possibly a solo cd of Barbara (all ballads).
It would be great to get feedback on this subject to help us make up
our minds.....are there fans out there that would want to own these
cds? There are unreleased studio recordings and good quality home
recordings of rehearsals of new material, some of which we played in
concert but never released on record.
Anyone who wants to lend their support and encouragement should
leave a message on the PBC message board:

On the "Music week" industry charts, it debuted at 9 after one week on
release (chart first broadcast by Radio 1 on Sunday 7th September),
then 20, 32, 47, 55 and last week was at 56.
Meanwhile, the album charted at # 2 after one week of release and went
10, 14 and 28 last week.
You're up to date...as someone once said.

Just placed a song of Lulu's on musica, entitled "Everybody Clap" from
her days at Atlantic. I have never seen a compilation from this period
of her career.

You guys didn't mention two other of Lulu's pre-"Sir"
rockers..."Shout" and "Surprise Surprise". While
"Shout" is a little overdone in my opinion, "Surprise
Surprise" really shows her off. Her snotty, vindictive
vocal blows the Stones original away, and should be
enough to make anyone forgive her "To Sir With Love".

Dear Spectropop,
He doesn't usually let me near his blessed computer. Well,
not when he's *in*. Presently, he's locked in his quarters
with a pile of Billy Fury records. Says he's practising
posing for his statue. But I'm guessing that, if he were to
be cast in bronze, it would be with his clothes *on*, yes?
Whatever. A note has appeared from under his door. It reads:

As far as I know, Art, you're correct. Baby's is '63, Thee
Midnighters' '66, Timi's '68.
The Northern Soul scene has taken Timi's version on board as a
bit of an "anthem". A club I deejayed at last year, The Rocket,
had a very emotional moment [thinking about it now still brings
a lump to my throat) when it was played because the title kind
of sums up what the Northern soul scene is about for them I
suppose.
Timi's version was recorded in the UK (was it released in the
U.S?) and arranged by Ian Green, Rosetta Hightower's husband.
Rosetta performed it live at the said club for us.

I really enjoyed that. I love his vocal "phrasing" and
combined with the tunelessness, it's a real gem. I like
how he gets carried away near the end of it. Reminds me
a little of Jack Murdurian, that guy in a nursing home who
David Greenberger recorded for his Duplex Planet project.

Yes, Dee Dee Warwick did the original "You're No Good", and what
a superior, raw, exciting cut that is. Great background vocals
as well courtesy of Cissy and others!!!!!

Anyone heard the recording of Buddy berating band members on the tour
bus? Abusiveness personified. He threw one guy right off the bus,
fired him in the middle of nowhere.

Jake Holmes has (sort of) recently reactivated his recording career.
In 2001 he put out a wonderful new CD called DANGEROUS TIMES. It
was/is available from (if I remember correctly) either CD Baby or
mp3.com.
Speaking of the latter, he also contributed a song to their multi-
artist Christmas CD last year ("Pax").

Man" by Duane Eddy, complete with girl group backing vocals. My
question is... who is the girl group that's backing Darrell on the

(31st October) and in an unstable and changing world I think that's a
thought to cling to.

Regards,
Guy

Hi,
Alan Brackett of the PBC posted this message over at the Unofficial
