Hi Austin,
You mentioned Cashman and West in a recent post. I love their
recordings; I have solo albums by both of them. They (or perhaps
Tommy solo--can't remember) did what is for me the definitive
version of Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.
Have you heard it?
Next time you talk to them, tell them they have a fan on
Spectropop who loves those Lifesong albums.
(Invite them to join us!)
Thanks,
---Dan

Pals Country Paul, Simon White and Phil Chapman are grown men
spending their time writing about a silly, novelty girl-group
song. This confirms I'm in good company!
CP's earlier letter rang bells but I've been too busy to reply,
Simon's posting rang some more, while Phil Chapman's letter had
me hunting through my 45s. Just when I was about to accuse Phil
of not returning my 45(!) I remembered where the track came from.
As Simon recalled it's from a compilation, "Laff Blasts From
The Past" the first of two 80's LPs issued in the UK on Red
Lightnin' all Herb Abramson (Atlantic co-founder) productions
and mostly unreleased 60s recordings.
Herb's sleeve notes on The Jarmolettes with his composition "The
Baby Monkey's Song (Yes We Have No Bananas)" recorded in '65 states:
"Can you imagine, "Yes We Have No Bananas" sung with soul? The
Jarmolettes were only 14-15 years old when they sang this pearl
to the favourite fruit. Listen for Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie's
drumming."
Some great vocal groups on both LPs particularly "Boss Vocal
Groups of the 60s" that features the Clovers, Ravens, Universals
and Sonny Til & The Orioles. I've played another great
fun track from "Laff Blasts..."; The Cashmeres (Barbara and
Lorraine Joyner and Annette and Valerie Swinson) with Eddie Jones
(who coached the Shirelles) "Daddy Can I Go To The Hop" recorded
in '59, to Guy's http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TweedleeDumsDrive-In/
site.
