I am saddened to hear of the passing of Luther. I had been
under the obviously mistaken impression that he was doing
better and better. His efforts to 'come-back' have encouraged
many of us to do the same. Nothing can hurt you now, Luther...
You will be missed.

Really great info about the chronology of, "Superstar." Much of which
I didn't know. This website shows "Superstar" appearing on their 1972
LP, "Country Life", prior to the compilation, "Together":

Wow. Never would I have dreamt to get my mail answered so detailed
and most of all by Mr. Saussy himself. Thank you very much Skip. The
story is another fine example of the oddities within the music
business. Although I own both Warner LPs I think I should give the
Rhino set a go. As far as I know there are a few non-LP tracks on it.
Frank J. (not old enough to remember Dresden)
P.S.: are there any other musicians who willingly sold their name?
(that means not forced by management or record company)

Ciao Julio, since I wrote to Spectropop somebody wrote me to say
that "Il treno" was done by the Exciters with the title "Say it with
love". I don't know if Van McCoy ever recorded it himself.

Hi group,
I have a question for Motown experts. Carolyn Crawford is one of my
favourite over-looked Motown artists. I've read she released 3
singles and I've heard a couple of these sides. Does anyone know if
she has anything left unreleased in the vault? It seems most Motown
acts that released more than one single have some unreleased tracks
kicking around. I wonder if Universal has any plans to release a comp
by her now that they're mining the company's holdings. Any insight?

I have "Broken Heart Atack" here on the shelf so a voice comparison
session is due to take place this morning at 11.30 am. The point of
this really is to establish exactly who "Mr Dynamite" on UK "Sue" and
alledegedly US "Soultime" is.
Then I can go back to worrying about who exactly Joy Lovejoy was.

Thanks to all the Spectropoppers who wrote me regarding my new
Monkees book. It is reviewed in the brand new issues (dated August)
of Mojo and Record Collector - so, I am very proud. If you live in
the Los Angeles area, I will be doing a free event with Peter Tork
(of the Monkees) to which I wanted to invite all local Spectropoppers.
On Saturday, July 9th from 5-7pm, I'll be signing books at Tower in
Sherman Oaks (Sherman Oaks Galleria; 15301 Ventura Blvd.; Sherman
Oaks, CA 91403; (818) 789-0500) and Peter will also treat the crowd
to an acoustic set!
Peter and I will also be on L.A.'s local oldies station KRTH 101.FM
tomorrow morning (July 6, 2005) talking with DJ Hollywood Hamilton
sometime after 8am.
Thanks for your interest,

It's a misprint for "Ernest Maxin". He googles up quite nicely:

Live365.com had a huge server crash during the July 4th weekend,
wiping out 3 of my stations. So I took the downtime while re-uploading
songs (again) to upgrade things.
"Jangle Radio - Power Pop" (my modern Power Pop station - all new
stuff) is now streaming in Mp3pro 32K stereo, for all those 2-channel
headphone junkies. http://www.live365.com/stations/bgspradlin3
To make things more confusing, "70's/80's Jangle Radio" is now known
as "Jangle Radio - Retro Pop" playing Old School Power Pop, "New
Wave", Melodic AOR and obscure Top 40 faves from the 70's, 80's and a
little bit from the early 90's.
http://www.live365.com/stations/bgspradlin
My most popular station "60's Jangle Radio" has moved to a new server
and now is streaming 1200+ songs! Many Classics and Super-Rare Pop!
http://www.live365.com/stations/bgspradlin4
And if you love Girl groups, "Spectropop's Girlpop" radio is still
rocking with the Wallasound.

Recording The Beau Brummels
by Al Hazan
The liner notes accompanying "Magic Hollow", the 2005 CD box set by
the Beau Brummels, refer to their recordings produced at Gold Star
Studios in 1964 as "the band's holy grail". Until then those tracks
had only ever been rumoured to exist. Now's your chance to read a
first hand account of the session by the actual producer, Al Hazan:

It's now out. The Ace Records website has just had its monthly
update. Included is a nice article by Kingsley Abbott about the CD,
complete with sound. Here's the URL, just click on the cover image:
http://www.acerecords.co.uk/
> The Reparata track will be the highlight for me...
Oh yes, "I'm Nobody's Baby Now" is one of the best records of its
type. This will be the first time the track has been out on a legit
CD. RCA supplied a mastertape, which sounds fantastic! I guess you'll
be interested in one of Ace's pending releases, then - a 30-tracker
entitled "The Best Of Reparata & The Delrons". It'll be out at the
end of August. Is anyone interested in seeing an advance copy of the
track list?
Hey la,
Mick Patrick
PS: Btw, Kingsley's new book "Wall Of Sound: The Phil Spector
Reader", featuring many articles old and new about Spector's musical
career, will be out soon. It's published by Helter Skelter.

Phil Humphrey of the Fendermen supposedly sold the name for $20 when
he got out of the business long ago, but I don't know if that's true.
A few months ago Humprhey reunited with Jim Sundquist, his original
partner, for the first time since 1961.

I always liked "I Found You" and had previously traced the group's
origins to an Edmonton, Alberta group of the same name. Wasn't them
of course on the recordings, but I did see a photo on ebay years ago
& saved it for my own curiousity. I've uploaded it to the PHOTOS

Will: I met Carolyn Crawford a few years ago when she was performing
-- get this -- as a Vandella behind Miss Reeves!!! She did tell me
that she recorded so much at Motown that WAS NOT released, so there
are tapes floating around somewhere. Interestingly, she also told me
that the background on "My Smile Is Just A Frown...." included
Martha, Smokey, and a host of other singers--NOT the Andantes (SHOCK
