Is this the same Pat Lewis who sang 'No one to love' - what a tune, One of my current faves. You can find it on a Keb Darge comp. The short blond guy is David White who also sang with Danny and the Juniors (At The Hop) and the tall guy is John Madara who has his own website http://www.thatphillysound.com with information on alot of the Philly acts from the 60's with alot of pictures too. Message: 3 Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 20:59:38 +0100 From: Mick Patrick Subject: Anita Harris > Burt Bacharach > Cissy Houston > The Olympics - no, not the group Anyway, before we so rudely interrupted, London won the battle to stage the 2012 Olympics. What has that to do with S’pop? Well, I just spotted the following in Tuesday’s paper: ------------------------------------------------------------------- I know just the anthem for the Olympics . . . I’m delighted we won the Olympics, but can see controversial choices ahead on the transport, the security and, most of all, the anthem for the games. On the last, I can help. People say that, unlike New York, London hasn’t had many great songs written in her honour. They must have missed Anita Harris’s neglected 1965 classic, "London Life". Although she’s remembered for the Carry On films, Anita began her career in pop and persuaded Burt Bacharach to come to Swinging London and write her a hit. And very good it is too, as well as being spookily prescient. After he lost, Bertrand Delano, the mayor of Paris, implied that the PM had cheated by lobbying through the night. He moaned that "... as I was going back to my hotel room to go to bed, I saw people coming out from successive meetings with Tony Blair and Sebastian Coe". As luck would have it, in "London Life", Anita sings: "While Paris sleeps, London keeps right on a-swinging". (Nick Cohen, the Evening Standard) -------------------------------------------------------------------- Good record, "London Life". Should they so wish, those who haven’t heard it can find it on the new "It’s So Fine: Pye Girls Are Go" comp. More info, plus audio samples here: http://www.sanctuaryrecords.co.uk/itssofine/ Please God I never have to hear "Gold" by Spandau Ballet ever again. Right, back to my newly discovered treasure: Cissy Houston’s version of Bacharach and Hilliard’s "Mexican Divorce". Anyone hip to that? I don't know where you'd find an original 45, however. Is this the same singer and song who appeared on one of the 'Ready Steady Go' videos way back? Wonderful in its tackiness. Message: 5 Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 22:18:45 -0000 From: Mike Edwards Subject: Jimmie Haskell Mick was looking for some recordings arranged by Jimmie Haskell. I imagine Mr. Haskell's name must appear on a lot of records but I've got a gem here. It's "Adonis" by Clairette Clementino (Capitol 5081, 1963). I believe the original version was by Terri Dean on Laurie from 1959. But having said this, the big book shows other versions by Gale Gibson on RCA, Terri Stevens on Felsted. and Jacky Noguez on Jamie – all from 1959. There was a great cover version that year by Petula Clark on UK Pye also. No doubt benefiting from 1963 production techniques, the Clairette Clementino/Jimmie Haskell is the definitive version. When they change chords after the instrumental break and bring on the back-up singers, it's like heaven. Ms. Clementino went on to work with our own Stu Phillips, who made the equally great "It's Happening To Me" (Capitol 5177, 1964) with her. By 1966, she had dropped the Clementino part of her name, picked up a spiffy French accent and put out an awesome revival of Jodie Sands' "With All My Heart" (b/w "Lollipops And Roses") on Colpix with Gene Page as the arranger. Closing out the thread, this song was also covered by Petula Clark on UK Pye in 1957. "Adonis" by Clairette Clementino could make it to musica if space becomes available. No rush, though, because there are some great rarities in there right now. Go get 'em! Mike Edwards -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

It sounds like a film theme. Is one of the composers, Bobby Scott, the chap who wrote "Honey"? Roy Clough: > I'm trying to find the original version of "Goodbye my love", a > big hit for The Searchers in the UK, it was called "Goodbye my > lover goodbye" and was by Robert Mosely I think. Anyone have it? I was always under the impression that Jimmy Hughes did it first, probably the year after this. Ken On The West Coast -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 7 Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 20:06:24 -0400 From: Country Paul Subject: Thanks for Chuck Foote info; C-P Box; Wall III ideas; Dante update Still catching up, so I didn't see the posts re: Chuck Foote in the next digest after I'd previously stopped. Thanks to everyone for their wisdom and knowledge; where else would half a dozen posts come up about someone this obscure?! I've done some serious listening to the Cameo-Parkway box set. It's amazing how much sharper and clearer the tracks are on CD; must be those sandpaper C-P pressings which obscured that fact. Among those on the plus side: the two Evie Sands tracks are total revelations - crystal clear, brilliant highs, and superb singing; "Angel Of The Morning" sounds brand new. The clarity of Eddie Holman's voice on "This Can't Be True Girl" was lost on my scratchy 45; it's brilliant here. The Kinks' "Long Tall Sally" has a great Mersey sound that never opened itself up on my 45. And repeating myself from Volume 1, I'm really digging Chubby's "Pony Time" and "Birds & Bees" by The Temptations, a new discovery for me. On the minus side: you can hear how thin some of the C-P arrangements were; for example, I really notice that there's no bass on "Bristol Stomp," although the kick-drum is working overtime. But for all the hits that I burned out on when new, listening to the clarity of these transfers is like hearing them anew, and some of the unfamiliar material has been a revelation as well. Thank you to my anonymous benefactor! Peter Andreasen re: Another wall of soundalikes - a wish for vol.3 > Any other surgestions? "I Still Love Him" by The Joys, and some of the Teddy Bears and Paris Sisters imitators, when the "wall" was covered in satin and velvet. One of the latter: "That's The Way With Love" by The Cheer Leaders on Encore (1961); there's Gary Paxton involvement on it. I also second Phil M's suggestion for Bonnie's "Close Your Eyes." Last weekend I had a phone call from Don Drowty, "Dante" of Dante & The Evergreens. He has checked out Spectropop, liked it, but mentioned there were some errors regarding his remembrances of the group's history. i suggested that he join us; I hope he does. He's heavily involved with a variety of "good works" projects, including entertaining the US troops; he also reports he's been doing a bunch of shows with Dean Torrance. As a diehard Bacharach fan, it came as a surprise to me when I grabbed that comp. Doesn't that comp also have that terrific version of "Blue Star"? -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
