Subject: The Bootiques
I have another query aimed at hard-core girl groupies. The
group in question is the Bootiques, purveyors of the
delicious "Did You Get Your Fun", released on Date 1513 in
1966. But first, some background...
The éminence grise behind "Did You Get Your Fun" was Sunshine
Pop legend-in-the-making Curt Boettcher. Fresh from two years
as a member of the folksy Goldebriars, he was at the beginning
of his career as a producer, manning the controls for acts
like the Association and Tommy Roe. He moved on to much
grander West Coast projects like the Millennium, Sagittarius
and California Music, upon which the late luminary’s
reputation now rests. The composer of "Did You Get Your Fun",
Bootiques leader Christine Costello, is the daughter of Lou,
the comedy star.
Maybe someone can tell me:
Did Christine Costello, or the group, make any other records?
Does anyone have a picture of the Bootiques? If such a thing
exists, I think I know what they might be wearing on their
feet!
Hey la,
Mick Patrick

This box set is what us Meek-aholics have been waiting for a long
time (love the demos). New York Dolls? How about Wayne County?

Subject: Claire Francis update
Hello, friends,
Our dear Claire wrote me recently and asked me to share part of her
message with the group. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers,
especially around her October 24 surgery. Claire writes:
"Please send my love and light to everyone. I just can't seem to get
into e-mailing; my focus is very much elsewhere, but I am feeling and
thinking about my dear friends at S'pop Nation. Kisses and hugs and
love and light to all of you. I hope to write and tell everyone that
I pulled through this next surgery that has been postponed three
times due to poor health. I feel a little better, but can't help
feeling a bit vulnerable to it all. October 24 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern
time I go under - yikes!!!!"

Subject: GoldStar Studios Website
Has anybody gotten an answer from the GoldStar Studio website
concerning when they were going to open their memorabilia for
sale to the Gold Star devotees? I received an e-mail once from
them saying that it was coming soon, however, that was close
to a year ago. Is there ANYONE out there that can land a clue
as to when this might happen? Any help or answer would be
appreciated.

Thanks much in advance!

Subject: New book on the Brill Building songwriters
Hi folks,
There's a cool new book being released in a couple of days. Always
Magic in the Air: The People and Music of the Brill Building Era,
by Ken Emerson, covers the careers of seven powerhouse songwriting
teams: Doc Pomus/ Mort Shuman, Carole King/Gerry Goffin, Neil
Sedaka/Howard Greenfield, Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, Mike Leiber/
Jerry Stoller, Ellie Greenwich/Jeff Barry, and Burt Bacharach/Hal
David.
To read the book review on the Christian Science Monitor website,
Needless to say, I'm ordering my copy right this very minute!

Subject: The Dixie Cups in concert
Hi, fellow Spectropoppers,
Those of you who saw my earlier threads on The Dixie Cups will recall
that two of the trio's original members, sisters Rosa and Barbara
Hawkins, have been residing at a Tampa hotel since being left
homeless by Katrina's unwelcomed visit to New Orleans. This past
Saturday, I had the pleasure of seeing the gals in concert, and of
meeting with them after the show. The Dixies put on a wonderful
performance, and you couldn't ask for sweeter and more personable
ladies.
If you'd like to see photos from the concert, click on the link below
to visit my site, Classic Pop Music Concert Pix. The link to the
Dixie Cups photo page appears in the nav bar on top (it's in the
third-from-last position), or you can scroll halfway down the
homepage for a more prominent link.

Enjoy,
Laura

Subject: Licensing knowledge needed
Will someone with a knowledge of song licensing please contact me
off-list? I am licensing 500 copies on my Almeron Records label
of "The Morells Anthology 'LIVE' - 101 Songs about Cars, Girls,
and Food!!!" 4 CD set by individual song for the most part, and
one early response has included a $12 surcharge on the 8.5 cent
statutory rate, and I've got the feelin' (hey, that's one of the
songs!) that I don't legally have to pay it. Can anyone help?
Also included is the Barry Mann/ Howard Greenfield song "WAR
PAINT," but I can't work that into a relevant sentence. It
appears that you don't have to be crooked to be in the record
business, but it would sure help the bottom line!

The only thing I've heard about the book is that it's quite dry,
like reading someone's master's thesis.

Subject: Bikinis, Monkees & Delrons
Anyone out there interested in Annette Funicello, Carol
Connors and Shelley Fabares? How about Jill Gibson, Susan
Hart, the Honeys, Candy Johnson, Little Pattie, Donna
Loren, the Murmaids, Rachel & the Revolvers, Judy Russell
or the Surf Bunnies? Maybe girl singers aren't your bag,
but guys like Brian Wilson, Gary Usher, Bruce Johnston,
Terry Melcher, Joe Saraceno, Phil Sloan & Steve Barri and
Gary Zekley are? You need Stephen J. McParland's new book
Bikinis, Black Denim And Bitchen Sounds: A Musical
Appreciation Of Female Surf, Hot-Rod And Related
Recordings 1961-1967. A review has just been added to the
S'pop Recommends section. Check it out:
http://www.spectropop.com/recommends/index2005.htm#Bikinis
Ever wondered on what date and at which studio Jack
Nitzsche's orchestral arrangement for the Monkees'
"Porpoise Song" was recorded? If so, you need to read
Andrew Sandoval's new book The Monkees: The Day-By-Day
Story Of The 60s TV Pop Sensation. Find a review/taster
right here:
http://www.spectropop.com/recommends/index2005.htm#Monkees
Without a doubt, "I'm Nobody's Baby Now" by Reparata & the
Delrons is one of *the* most revered recordings here on
planet Spectropop. Incredible, but true - S'pop's Ray Otto
was there at the session. Find out more in his review of
the group's new "Best Of" CD:

Enjoy,
