On the count of three . . . . it's on PET SOUNDS! There's a
whole lot of surprises you're in for once when you start wading
through the B-sides and odd singles/album cuts. Just wait till
you get to "Let Him Run Wild", "Baby, Baby" or Substitute Beach
Boy Glen Campbell's "Guess I'm Dumb".

'Tis playing now at musica as I type, but please do be
careful not to frighten the cat while rolling up the carpet:

Details are: Allen Cromer "(The) Eighty-One" (Edge 504, 1963);
written by McGhee and Caldwell; arranged and conducted by
Teacho Wiltshire; produced by Bob McGhee.

I'm sure we'd all love to see that artefact, so yes please.
Excellent group, Candy & the Kisses. You converts have their
CD, yes? If not, find out more, and hear sound bites, here

In search of a less regimented existence, it ran off to
live with Martin. Last I heard, it was living as an umlaut
with another apostrophe.
Right, now who knows how to do the Jelly Belly? Tony?

It's an instrumental that my daughter's piano teacher transcribed
by ear for me with seriously creative chord changes and melodic
intricacies. But don't let that scare you. It translates into a
pretty pop song. I happen to have the 45 and it is credited to
Brian Wilson as opposed to the Beach Boys. It is from 1965 and I
know it is included on the double CD reissue that includes the
"Today" album and I forget the other one. Maybe All Summer Long.
It is track 22. Once you hear it you'll have a renewed Brian
Wilson Epiphany.

That one is on Pet Sounds, which Paul McCartney has said served
as the blueprint for Sgt. Pepper's. Pet Sounds is required
listening. To not have listened to it is to be partially derelict
in Beach Boy Diligence. IMHO. Pet Sounds will be your Second
Epiphany.

Baby, Baby? I've never even *heard* of this, and I've been a BBs

Subject: Song Credit Needed: "Our Love Will Go On and On"
Can anyone help me identify a song, that has been on my mind for
several months? It's a late 50s-early 60s track, sung by a female
lead, with male backing group. It goes, "Our love will never die/
As long as there is you and I...Our love will live on and on,
through gladness and through sadness". I have been trying to ID
this track, but have not found anything online.
I see there is a track on RCA by a group named the McCoys, called
"Our Love Goes On and On", but I have a feeling that isn't it.
This track sounds like The Essex, but I see no listing for them
with this title. Any ideas?
Thanks-
Stefano

Thanks for this information. I have seen the "Pet Sounds" CD in my
local public library, and next time I see it, I will check it out.
In my previous message, I referred to "God Only Knows" as a ballad.
I have since remembered that the Beach Boys' version has somewhat of
a beat to it. It's the Neil Diamond version that has such an absence
of a beat that when I first heard it, I didn't even realize it was the
same song! Then again, "Don't Worry Baby" as done by the Beach Boys
has a beat to it, too, so maybe you'd consider their version of "God
Only Knows" to qualify as a ballad, too.
A slow Beach Boys song that I like sometimes, depending on my mood,
is "The Warmth of the Sun".

Artie -
I love that song! Thanks for co-writing such a treasure.
Would anyone confirm if that is The Love Generation singing backup
for Michael there? I always though this song sounded like a Partridge
Family tune with Michael Jackson instead of David Cassidy.

My guess would be yes, since both the Elevators and The Clique were from
Texas. I'm familiar only with the White Whale 45 by the Clique, but I do
believe that they traversed some psyche territory on their album(s). I
remember reading how REM discovered the flip of "Sugar On Sunday" when
working at a record store and playing a whole bunch of 45s. That song was
the Gary Zekeley penned and produced "Superman," and of course REM did
a nice, and quite faithful to the original, remake of the song.

Look at The Kit Kats' output and you'll see that the answer is a resounding
"No." On their "It's Just A Matter of Time" LP alone, they cover "The Nut
Rocker," "Cotton Fields," "Sea Of Love," "Funny How Love Can Be," "Liza-Jane,"
and "These Are A Few of My Favorite Things"! And this from a band that had
been playing Hank Ballard and Little Richard and would eventually add
"Sabre Dance," "Those Were The Days," and the entire "Tommy" album to
their live set!

I have to wholeheartedly second Phil's sentiment about "Dance, Dance" and
have felt that way ever since I first heard the song. My first exposure to
the song was when it was posted to musica a few years ago by Jeffrey Glenn.
I do believe the song was a hit was in Pittsburgh and I'm sorry that it did
not take off nationally. I'm also sorry and surprised that it did not make
the track list for the Nuggets box set. It deserved to be there.

Yes, but does anyone out there know where/how "The 81" got its name?
(No a quiz -- I don't know!).

Subject: news of Bobby Charles whereabouts?
Does any S'popper have any news of the health and whereabouts
of the great New Orleans singer/songwriter Bobby Charles? I'm
following up a query posted on another music site by Arthur
Baysting, Project Director, NZ Music Industry Commission, who
writes:
"I'm a bit concerned as I haven't been able to find any details
about him on the net since hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He was
living squarely in the path of the second one. I wonder if you
have any news of him?"
After Katrina, Dr John talked about him and his songs but I can't
get anything definite; I know he's not as mobile as he used to be."
I know that the new Dr. John Katrina fund raising CD features a
version of Bobby Charles' later song "Clean Water", and has been
well reviewed.
Any info please?
Regards
Norm D.

I was referring to the bonus CD alt. take of "Let Him Run Wild" where the
background chorus is singing "baby, baby".
