It's definitely a classic. I bought it blind a few years ago from Malcolm Baumgart and was not disappointed when I put it on my turntable. It's ironic that she covered a Supremes' song all those years ago but became a Vandella in the 80s for Martha Reeves, when she would pick up almost any girl to back her up on one of her many British tours. But in Beryl, she picked a real good 'un. Best wishes, David -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 2 Date: Tue, 06 Dec 2005 18:17:27 -0000 From: Tony Leong Subject: Re: Motown covers . . . good 'n' bad Huge topic to cover here, but there's a couple of really good Motown covers that come to mind: "A Love Like Yours Dont Come Knockin Everyday" by Ike and Tina Turner. Beautiful arrangement that sounds like the track was recorded in a cathedral--well, Phil Spector was the producer!! Much more appealing to me than the Vandellas original (don't get me wrong--I love THEM, but this was not one of my faves). "Baby I Need Your Loving" by Johnny Rivers and the Blossoms. YES, I know that the cut is really only credited to Johnny RIvers, but the Blossoms (with Edna very prominent) carry the background effortlessly as they always do!! Then of course there's the belting shouts at the fade out (Darlene or Edna??). Speaking of original versions, anybody ever hear Johnny's original version of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix"?? That masterpiece is worth a thread of its' own!!!! Oh, and Dusty Springfield did some credible remakes live on her "60's TV show of "Nowhere To Run", "Heat Wave", "You Lost The Sweetest Boy" (though she flubbed a couple of lines and covered it up with a laugh or one of her artistically distracting hand movements!!). And in the '80's, Bananarama did justice to "He Was Really Saying Something" and "Nathan Jones" singing in their usual Dixie-Cups-style unison vocal. Plus the forgotten Belle Stars punchy "Needle In A Haystack" deserves a mention. There's more good ones, but I won't even get into the bad ones (well intended I'm sure), but I musn't complain.... Taken from the Okeh album "The Explosive Little Richard " from 1967 is 'Function At The Junction' a fantastic cover of Shorty Long's Motown track. Little Richard and Motown. Now that would have been a match. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

However according to her website she has released her first CD! All the Best, Mark -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 6 Date: Wed, 7 Dec 2005 05:51:36 -0800 (PST) From: Artie Wayne Subject: Billboard Awards The Billboard Award show is the only music award show based on actual sales. Mariah Carey and 50 cents won 6 awards each. There were few surprises, except for a few dismal performances by winners who weren't smart enough to perform the songs that made them win in the first place!...And where was Pro-Tools when we needed it? It was nice, however, to see Tom Petty receive the Century Award. Regads, Artie Wayne http://artiewayne.com -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 7 Date: Wed, 07 Dec 2005 17:16:28 -0000 From: Peter Andreasen Subject: Alain Barriere on CD Anyone with recomendations on how or where to get a CD with original 60s tracks like "Elle était si jolie" from Alain Barriere. I am pretty disapointed by all those re-cuts that seems to be repacked again and again....... -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
