What in god's name does the Edith Piaf version sound like? Only one way I'm going to find out.... Now, why didn't I see this info. before Christmas? As this great CD is on the Ace label, can I give a shameless plug to a quiz that I've set, on another music site, that's offering, as the first three prizes, 5, 4, and 3 single CDs of your choice from the Ace Records catalogue. The most correct answers win. The link for the quiz is here: http://www.charliegillett.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1705 You have to register as a site user, but it's all free. Many of the questions should be a breeze to S'Poppers, but there are a few stinkers. Closing date is this Sat. Jan. 7th. Bon chance, as Edith might have said. Lauderdale Area which closed a few years ago, Sir Arthur Oldies. In the 70s, Artie Appelbaum had a shop on the beach, then moved west, finally settling in Tamarac. Artie used to go to New York each summer to vacation and to search for more old vinyl. Around 2002 he decided to retire, and close the store. Around that same time Artie died, leaving the family to liquidate the vast inventory. Last I heard, no one was willing to buy up the entire lot of records. Sad to know that his family had no interest in keeping alive Artie's love for stacks of wax. Age is a number that tells how long you have lived in this world, not how to live in it. Larry Bromley good day! -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

He's a good guy, who never has lost his edge and certainly desrves any award he gets. I am curious, however, how the recipients are chosen, and why did Andrew Lloyd Webber becme a Knight and Tim Rice didn't? Why did Mick Jagger...and not Keith Richards? thanks and regards, artie wayne http://artiewayne.com -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Message: 5 Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 21:20:32 EST From: Mike Rashkow Subject: Steve Tudanger's Funeral Steve will be buried on Wednesday in NY. I am hoping to put together a little book of remembrances about him to give to his closest friends and family. I can copy whatever is in the S'Pop Archives, but if some of you reading this have a thought or a memory about him you'd like to offer in that regard, please send it to me off-list. Thanks. I have to confess a bit of ignorance here - I always thought Sandy Linzer was a "she" and that the Sandy Linzer/Denny Randell team was a guy/gal (or in this case, gal/guy) team like Goffin/King, Mann/Weil, and Barry/Greenwich! Thanks for this bit of enlightenment. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 7 Date: Wed, 04 Jan 2006 03:35:26 -0000 From: Regina Litman Subject: Re: The Ventures - "I feel fine" On the Ventures' first Christmas album, which came out in the mid-1960s, most of the holiday songs start out with an intro that is reminiscent of a hit song of the day that the Ventures had also recorded. I know that one of the songs starts with an "I Feel Fine" intro; I think it's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer". I just love this album - it's my favorite instrumental Christmas album, while "A Christmas Gift to You" is my favorite with "straight" vocals. My favorite parody vocals Christmas album is "More Twisted Christmas" by Bob Rivers and Twisted Radio. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

What in god's name > does the Edith Piaf version sound like? It sounds just like the Cheers' version, except with two less people, and it's in French. The snare drums, French horns, and all the rest of the production are virtually identical to the Cheers' recording. It's just rather shocking when you're expecting to hear Bert Convy and the gang, only to discover it's a rather shrill, latter-day Edith Piaf instead. The guys at Ace begged us to choose another version, but we're not known for playing well with others, so we said no. -Randy Poe -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Just to set the record straight, it's not really "latter-day" Edith Piaf. Assuming there's really a "latter-day" Edith Piaf. This track is really "prime" Piaf and was one of her biggest hit in France. Frank -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

I'm happy to say that I spoke to my longtime friend Richard Kimball, former DJ on KMET in Los Angeles, currently producer of some of the best music programming in syndication...and he sounds great!! Last week he had quadruple bypass surgery...and yesterday he was on the phone setting up his next project!! I know how he feels. I was one of the first Americans in 1965 to have open heart surgery, and here I am!! Anyway, Richard is grateful for the calls and emails and wishes you all a Happy New Year!! Regina, they revisted the theme in 2003 with a album Guitar Christmas - basically rerecordings of the songs you mention but with some new tracks. It can be bought relatively cheaply - I picked it up for £3.99 (about $7) brand new. PS: More sad news - Mike Botts of Bread also passed away on 12/9. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
