New at S'pop Recommends: Jimmy Jones
Famed for his smash hits "Handy Man" and "Good Timin'",
Jimmy Jones possessed one of the great falsetto voices
of the early 60s. But he recorded in many other styles
throughout his long career. The good folk at Sanctuary
have collected a whopping 48 of his recordings onto one
great 2CD set. Read Mike Edwards' review right here:

Hi Artie, & Philip P - My feeling is that the Ondioline
page is inaccurate in listing "Runaway". It can easily
happen, espcially when a hit sound becomes folklore.
Max Crook is the BMI accredited co-writer of the
song, and he has a Citation of Achievement for it.
His website is really very comprehensive, including
an entire page devoted to how "Runaway" was originally
written and rewritten, and eventually recorded on
January 21st 1961 at Bell Sound Studios, 237 W54th,
with engineer Bill MacMeekin.
It makes for fascintating reading:
http://go.zibycom.com/members/002222119/Site4/maxrunaway.html
I've no doubt the studio had an Ondioline, and may have
even claimed it to be the one used on "Runaway", but I'd
run with Max's account of the recording session.
Best regards
Phil

Subject: The Actionettes - London party on Saturday!
Just enough time for one last reminder that the next Sophisticated
Boom Boom is this Saturday at the Water Rats in Kings Cross. The
original details are below, and you can view the flyer at
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/spectropop/lst
I'm thrilled to say that the Actionettes have asked me back, and I'll
be singing a few songs with their snappy dancing routines to
accompany me. There are also some other guests, but as I'm not sure
if I'm meant to let the cat out of the bag I'm going to keep schtum!
But it promises to be packed with even more 60s pop goodies than the
last one, so do check it out if you're in town!
Oh yes - if you've seen the 'Nettes at the S'pop parties, let's just
say it's just a taster of how girl-tastic they are at their own
clubs, especially as they will have the full troupe on the night.
Here's hoping some of the sparkle rubs off on me!
Right, where are my go go boots...

My memory is that the "Rube Goldberg device" at Allegro
was a Mellotron, not an Ondioline. Of course the most
interesting instrument at Allegro was the subway noise
passing through the floor into the studio.

To be fair to Bruce, the few times I've heard this song
on the radio, I've assumed that "he's trying too hard to
convince us he's having a good time" is the whole *point*
of the song! You know, how like "Downtown" is actually
a fairly depressing song because it sounds like Petula's
trying to convince herself that going downtown will solve
all her problems.

I believe that the Nino and April website reappeared about 2 1/2 to 3
months ago. The discography section is indeed impressive, and is
pretty new. I do wish someone would do something about the photo
section which has mostly old, grainy photos on it. There is nothing
to really explain the photos. Some of them speak for themselves.
A number of them are of N&A with various celebrities such as Cary
Grant and Dick Clark. There is a photo of April with Lucille Ball
and Desi Arnaz, among other people, and it would certainly be nice to
know what the occasion was for that photo, which apparently was taken
at a radio station.
The most interesting thing on the discography, in my opinion, is the
listing of a K-Tel album, released only in Europe in the 1970's
(Probably because "Love Story" became a rather big hit in some
European countries then). According to the listing, Nino and April
recorded songs made famous by other duos ("I Got You,
Babe", "Jackson", "You Don't Have To Be A Star", Don't Go Breakin' My
Heart", etc.). I was astonished that such an album had been made and
would love to have such a treasure.
Who was it on this board who said he would put the interview he did
with Nino Tempo (for a Japanese magazine) somewhere on the web, and
would inform us when he had done so so we could read it? I'd enjoy
being able to read it.

not exactly. it was the second album which had the photo (DECCA
DL75235), but was not called "when julie comes around". it was
called simply "the cuff links" and had this fantastic photograph
of the group in circle, which reminds me a lot to the one on the
happenings' "psycle".

Yeah, yeah, yeah......cool pink flyer but, Dumpling, do you seriously
think it's possible to arrange parole at such short notice?! Sometimes
life is such a bitch. Oh well, next time. My vanity case is always
packed and waiting.
> Right, where are my go-go boots?
Honey, I am the QUEEN of go-go boots! Did I tell you I share a room
with Joey Heatherton? She and I take the same teensy weensy size. Of
course, she does NOT deserve to be here. Yeah, right.
Before I return to my nails, can one of my S'pop buddies tell me who
did the original version of "Call Me"? Aah, I remember it well,
February 1966. Chris Montez was such a dreamboat, don'cha think? Joey
tells me it was a British song. Surely not?!
Break a leg!

"Downtown" never came off depressing to me. It always
seemed full of life and hope. I always assumed that
Petula was singing to someone else who was depressed
and trying to get them up on their feet again. "Maybe
you know some little places to go. . . ." I'll listen
to "Mary's Place" again to catch the thread, but the
tune is rather mudane. Bruce can do better and has
done so in the past (i.e. "The Heist").

Shouldn't the nominating body of the RRHF already know who put the
bomp? I mean, that's the whole point of the thing. It really seems
to me that some shameful historical revisionism is going on here...
what a shame it would be if future generations arrived at their
definition of rock 'n' roll based on the names of those who have been
inducted thus far. Something is missing from this picture! Where are
the professional songwriters? Where's Don Kirshner? George Goldner?
Why aren't there more women performers among the inductees? Why
aren't there more '60s pop rockers? As Stuffed Animal sniffs the air,
he thinks he detects the foul stink of sexism, prejudice and snobbery
coming from the direction of Cleveland!
