Joey Sir - I would've thought your name would be Joey "P"!!!! I got the answer about Laura Nyro's backgrounders from a Laura aficionado-- it was a group called the Hi-Fashions that were signed to a DynoVoice subsidiary. No, it was not the Blossoms backing Laura on those great cuts of hers. Remember, Laura cut her earliest stuff in New York in 1966. Back then, the Blossoms never left Los Angeles, but true that they were signed to Verve/MGM. Oh, and "WHERE'S YOUR RECORD STORE??????????" a nutty woman once asked you (LOL!!!!!!) One thing I noticed on the website with the Love & Tears picture sleeves is that the LP "Needles And Pins" was re-released on CD - have you tried to find it anywhere? Great song - it's on my 45 want list now! Billy -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Wonderful girls group out of Philly and did tons and tons of backgrounds before and after they got their one big hit. "When Will I See You Again" I think it was. So, c'mon you girl group mavens, let's hear about the Three Degrees. Rashkovsky -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Spradlin Subject: Another Mystery 45 - The Jam "Somethings Gone" 1972 Another Mystery 45 I have been trying to find is "Somethings Gone" by The Jam (not the Paul Weller-led UK band). David Bash put this on one of his AOL Power Pop Mix Tree tapes in the mid 90s, and its been a longtime favorite of mine. The only thing he knew about the 45 is that it came out on Sire in 1972. He discovered it on a Nuggets/Pebbles/Boulders style garage rock compilation LP. It's a super-catchy record (with a killer hook) and sounds more like a 1966-7 garage band than 1972. I have done searches using Google and other search engines and have found nothing about it. Who knows if stock copies ever existed? I will post it to musica and see if it jars anyone's memory. Billy Mitchell's "You Know I Do" is now playing on musica and it's a very good early Brill Building sound. I always thought it was Jeff Barry singing the background vocals as it sounds so much like the Raindrops. It would be great if someone would post the version by the Edsels. Incidentally, Stuff, have you heard Jeff Barry Singing "Welcome Home" (the Shelley Fabares/Frankie Avalon title)? He sounds a lot like Eddie Rambeau on this one. How about the Rover Boys with Barry- Raleigh's "Is It Me". Both nice. Let me know if there's any interest. Mike -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

The more impassioned verse vocal sounds quite a bit like Steve Marriot. The Searchers still did the definitive recording IMHO, and I like Cher's a lot also. Does the Jackie DeShannon have the verse with the lyrics "I can't let go although I know he'll make me cry till the day I die...etc." I can't remember. Not a patch on his classic productions. I wish he had never done it. It only detracts from those songs and productions for which he is so fondly remembered Brian -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
