I got a double CD of Shelby Flint on Collector's Choice some
time back. Contains all her Valiant recordings, I think....
In the sleeve notes which include interviews with SF, there's
no mention of "Batteaux", unless that's the name of the group
with which she recorded an early-80's album called "You've been
On My Mind", but it does mention recordings in a jazzy style on
Song River Records which must be fairly current (2001/2002)

Re: Chattahoochee Records. Ruth Conte was President of the label
that was based in Beverley Hills. Kim Fowley was involved along
the line, I believe. In 1996 the label was listed in Billboard's
"Buyer's Guide" yearbook as being alive and kicking from a base in
Sherman Oaks, CA.

Marty, what volume did you buy?
Whats the first song on it? I want to see if this is the same
series I have, on Farmer Records. There are several diffent
series of stuff like this, all with "Teenage" in the titles. The
series I have is excellent. One can go thru all the volumes and
put together a 30 track Cd where EVERY track is fantastic.

Subject: Tootie & The Bouquets/Alder Ray
Hello All,
In answer to Jimmy C.'s questions about
Tootie & The Bouquets/Alder Ray:
Not much is known about T&B, except that they may be related to
the Bouquets on Blue Cat and Mala. I don't know if there's any
connection to Little Eva and The Cookies, but I'll check. The
first version of "The Conqueror" was recorded by Lorraine & The
Socialites, earlier in 1963 and leased to Mercury Records.
Songwriter/producer Joe Simmons, possibly a partner in the small
Arrawak Record label, wrote the song and produced both versions
(I prefer the Socialites version). Simmons also gave us "I Love
Him" by The Castanets on TCF. TCF (eventually TCF/Arrawak) handled
many Bronx-born artists like The Socialites, The Chantels and Dean
Barlow of The Crickets/Bachelors/Montereys.
Alder Ray was the lead singer of The Delicates on Challenge ("I
Want To Get Married" and "Comin' Down With Love"). Her style is
toned down on the Spectoresque "'Cause I Love Him". It is quite
possible that Darlene Love was on the session. At that time, she
was contracted to Liberty as a session vocalist (The Victorians).
Alder Ray has recording on Minit and other labels, I believe billed
as Alder Ray Brown. When I first heard "'Cause I Love Him", it was
from a reissue compilation LP, the name of which escapes me now.
When I finally acquired an original copy, I was disappointed to find
out that the opening backing vocals were not present on the original
45. I thought this mix gave the song some extra punch. Therefore,
I prefer the reissue mix, where the backing vocals, "do you love him"
are heard before the lead comes in.
Regards,
John Clemente

A few weeks' back some members were wondering if "Somebody Else's
Girl" by Adam Charles was the same song as taken to #18 in the UK in
1963. I have just played the Adam Charles' song to musica and it is
the same song. Given a US release date of March 1963, it was probably
the original version. Not that it's the best version. Once again we
can only marvel at how adept the Fury camp was at ferreting out these
US titles, giving them the Fury treatment and scoring hit after hit
in the UK.
Bob Montgomery who was Buddy Holly's partner in Buddy And Bob before
Holly formed the Crickets wrote "Somebody Else's Girl". More about
this at:
http://www.fearnothingonline.com/bio/bobmontgomery.htm
Bob Montgomery also wrote "Misty Blue", "which in addition to being
covered by numerous established artists down the years has enjoyed
belated UK chart success in 2002, when the song was covered by
amillionsons as "Misti Blu" and given the full dancefloor remix
treatment!"
Which brings me to an article in the current edition of "Orlando"
magazine. They feature 5 former R&R greats who now reside in Central
Florida. The most interesting was Barbara Lewis but it was a comment
by Mike Gibbins of Badfinger, referring to their song "Without You"
that was a #1 for Nilsson in 1971, that caught my eye:
> "We threw that one away", smiles Gibbins. "It was filler. Harry
> took it to number 1. Mariah Carey did it not too long ago. She
> got to number 1 as well. She just bought me a >swimming pool"
A nice story when you consider the tragedies that befell some of
the members of that group!
Enjoy Adam Charles,
Mike

"Southbound Jericho Parkway" is a remarkable single. It's
pretty much a Neon Philharmonic record, but with Roy on vocals
instead of Don Gant. Gant moved to the producer's chair for
this one, while Tupper Saussy gets credit for the arrangement,
which sounds like it hopped off the first Neon Philharmonic album.

I've been told by Fred Wolf Films and Harry Nilsson's estate
that they don't consider the Pacific Family Entertainment DVD
and video tape to be legitimate. The DVD and tape are no longer
listed at Amazon.com and I've heard that Triumph Marketing has
stopped distributing them.
BMG Special Products has been working with Fred Wolf and Nilsson's
estate on a DVD release of "The Point!" on DVD and I'm sure that
it'll be of excellent quality when it's eventually released.

Sad that songwriter Ed Townsend passed away on Wednesday.
Although he is generally known for his 1958 surprise hit
"For Your Love" and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On", he
has written many tunes that are familiar to soul fans. One
of my favourites is Dee Dee Warwick's "Foolish Fool". I was
once listening to this full-tilt in a studio while setting
up a Led Zep session, and a rather inebriated John Bonham
declared "that's the way I want MY *!$%&£* drums to sound!"
