Baker's shop) in Sydney. Go to http://www.timewarp.com.au/html/canetoad_records.html for a list; their ordering details are at the link "What We're About" at the foot of the page. Canetoad is an interesting reissue label: some of this stuff is unavailable elsewhere. If I want to clear the room here I put on their compilation from the W & G label. It's pre-Brit Invasion instrumentals, mainly in the style of the Shads & the Ventures. Some of it is fairly excruciating but it's all of irresistible historic value. There are some gems amongst it, though, such as the local hit version of the Rebels/Rockin' Rebels' "Wild Weekend" by the Thunderbirds from Melbourne (and a fine version it is, too). And where else are you gonna hear the Saxons' instrumental of "Pedro the Fisherman"? The Canetoad label's name, by the way, is from an ugly and much-despised introduced pest in northern Australia. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 2 Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2003 11:41:42 EDT From: John Fox Subject: The Carolines I have a British-issued girl group compilation CD called "Run Mascara" that includes a great song, "Can't Stop Loving The Boy" by The Carolines. It was issued on the Roulette label but did not chart. Does anyone know who was in this group or what their story is? The lead vocal is tremendous. The liner notes barely mention anything. Message: 5 Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 02:49:52 GMT From: Mark Subject: Enough Lurking - Here's the Intro! Hey Guys! Decided to take the plunge and finally join this group after hearing about it on other lists! A little about me: I'm 39, a lifelong record collector/music buff from Cleveland, with a collection of over 6,000 45s, 02 ,000 LPs and hundreds of CDs (I have cassettes, but don't really count those as they are not my preferred music medium--too fragile). I have extremely broad tastes in music, but my main interests over the past few years have been Northern soul, garage punk, celebrity recordings, and older country, but I can converse about quite a lot of different musical genres. I have written liner notes for two Collectables CDs at the request of my friend, Outsiders guitarist Tom King: "Roots of the Outsiders" by Tom King and the Starfires and "30 Years Live" by the Outsiders feature my writings in the liners. If any of you have MSN or Yahoo Messenger, feel free to add my name to your contact list. My handle on both is elvimark; I use my Hotmail address for MSN (elvimark@hotmail.com) and this here address for my Yahoo. Looking forward to participating. There's quite a lot of things to weigh in on over the past week--best get to it! :) Best, Mark -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

This has just been reissued by Rev-Ola in the UK, with bonus tracks from non-LP 45s. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

I've got a 1967 Tommy Sands 45 on Imperial called "Candy Store Prophet" that quite simply rocks, driven by a combination of fuzztone and horns. You'd never guess who it was from hearing it! I've never heard them, but their name has always struck me as quite peculiar. Any relation to La La Brooks? Or are there really two La Las? Two years later he lost two of his three sons when his Nashville home caught fire. Del did a great tune called "Thinkin' It Over" on Liberty, where he did a lot of cover tunes at the time. Great anthem like tune that builds, but none of his stuff was psych. There was a CD of his Liberty stuff out a few years back. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 10 Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 05:08:57 -0000 From: jerophonic Subject: Shirley Ellis - Shy One Although I'm not sure how high it charted on local radio playlists at the time of release, Shirley Ellis' "Shy One" was a staple of high school dancesin the Philadelphia area through the mid-sixties. The lyric made it the perfect "ladies' choice" slow drag, and I have strong memories of hearing it echo inside cavernous gymnasiums along with "Thank You and Goodnight" and "Town Without Pity". It was also included on "30 Boss Hits"-type LP collections from local stations like WIBG. I didn't realize the applause on "Shy One" might be fake until years later. Several years ago Rhino issued a various artists collection which included a version of "Nitty Gritty" without the applause. It sounded really empty. But I'm curious: does a similar version of "Shy One" exist? -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 11 Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2003 11:12:29 EDT From: Bob Rashkow Subject: Re: Joey Levine Third Rail was a super group (though not a "supergroup"!!) "Invisible Man" is one of my favorite cuts. It takes a playful swipe at the typical commuter businessperson suburbanite way back in '67. "Run, Run, Run" (one of God knows how many songs by that name!) charted at #53 in early Fall '67. I never owned the single--is "No Return", the B-side, the same tune so wonderfully sung and played by Storybook People on Dunhill (which I do have)? Sloan-Barri, perhaps?
