There was some talk a few weeks backs about HB and today I picked up a few old 45's,one of which might be of interest to their fans---it's on Warner Bros. (7063), dated 1967. Side A is HB's version of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" and the flip is one that's new to me--"Malibu U". (It says "from the TV show Malibu U" --did I miss this one?) Lenny Waronker produced them both and Van Dyke Parks is listed as the piano player on the Cole Porter tune. I don't remember who the big HB fan was but if you want to have this for your collection (gratis, of course) then let me know and it's yours. Not only is Bob Crewe a MAJOR part of the Four Seasons' output, he also parlayed a 1966 Diet Pepsi ad to worldwide fame as the monster hit, "Music To Watch Girls By" and then, after touring England, released the brilliant pop instrumental LP "Music To Watch Birds By" (birds being Brit for gyrrrls ;-). THEN is was onto the major earth-shattering soundtrack to "Barbarella".......Jimmy Botticelli/So few knew Crewe, but now YOU do. --------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------- Subject: Re: Andy Ellison/Davy O'List Received: 06/20/99 9:40 am From: Barry Taylor, edixxxxort.net To: Spectropop List, spectroxxxxies.com >Andy Ellison was also the leader of the band Jet, whose >self-titled LP on CBS UK from 1975 is a great, glammy, >Sparks influenced disc! Jet's guitarist was Davy O'List, one of the founding members of Keith Emerson's group, The Nice (Immediate Records) and played some blistering Jeff Beck-ish solos on their first album. --------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------- Subject: Re: Rydell/Tammys Received: 06/20/99 9:40 am From: Michael "Doc Rock" Kelly, docroxxxxom To: Spectropop List, spectroxxxxies.com > Jack Madani wrote:- > >>Bobby Rydell's version of Volare, >>with the yacky/waily backing girl vocals that could >>almost have been the Tammys. > >Hmm.....I always thought it was the girls from the Orlons >behind that one (and most of Chubby Checker's stuff too). > >>I...thought that it was a little unfair that Rydell got >>tagged with that "no-talent Philly Pretty Boy" label. Two points. First, it was only a few elitists revisionist rock writers from the post-Beatles era who dissed Bobby Rydell. During his days, he was a star. Second, the Tammys never backed anyone except Lou Christie. I used to think they were a group of cute teenager girls with poni-tails. Interesting about the Charmettes underdub version, I hadn't noticed. I don't think I have heard the vinyl version. I really enjoyed vol 1 but don't have the Kent release to compare to, maybe those tracks will be released on this next volume? Just gotta love Dolly Parton's Don't Drop Out...complete with the Be My Baby drumbeat. Also like Joey Heatherton's take on Lesley Gore's Live And Learn. The Avons' Push A Little Harder was a surprise too. It is an exceptionally well done first effort. I guess with a singer from England, you can't go wrong;) I did check out the CD by the group The Minders and it is very good. It is amazing how many new groups are producing very nice pop music influenced by the '60s sound. Dave Mirich PS thanks to those of you who have recommended '60s psych-pop albums. I have thoroughly enjoyed, The Monkees, The Critters, The Creation, Small Faces, The Who (Sell out), Cryan' Shames, and The Smoke. BTW, did anybody check out the Ladybug Transistor CD? --------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------- Subject: BOUNCE spectroxxxxies.com: Non-member submi Received: 06/20/99 9:40 am To: Spectropop List, spectroxxxxies.com ========= Start of forwarded message ========= Subject: Del-Fi's updated Summer/early Fall release schedule IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 21 Here's [excerpts from] Del-Fi's updated Summer/early Fall release schedule June 22nd Various Artists-Del-Fi Girl Groups: Gee Baby Gee Features all the "girl group" and soul sister singles issued during Del-Fi's first "Golden Decade"! 19 of the 21 tracks are previously unreleased on CD.
