Subject: from Perry Botkin

I spoke to Perry about this (we converse quite a bit,
especially lately when our mutual friend Lyle Ritz is in
the LA for awhile), and here's his answers via email:

>>>> I wonder if engineers calculated how many
feet of splicing tape it would take to raise the pitch a
  1/4 tone, etc. <<<

Perry answered: 1 wrap of splicing tape (around the
capstan) was a up 1/4 tone and one wrap of masking tape
brought it up 1/2 tone. Awfully primitive but it worked.

  >>>>>>I think I have a fairly good idea of the role Botkin
played in the production team of Botkin/Garfield, but I
wonder what Gil Garfield's role was.<<<<<

Perry's answer: In Botkin/Garfield productions Gil and
I co-wrote music and lyrics for the songs and Perry
arranged. Gil worked in the booth while I took care of
the music in the studio. We worked together on the
mixes.

PS. To anyone in the LA area, Earl Palmer has a regular
Thursday night jazz venue where quite a few of the jazz
studio musicians (your truly included, playing jazz
guitar again, fun!) come down to sit in at "Charlie O's",
nice new jazz club on Victory Blvd., corner of Woodman,
east (and safe) side of Van Nuys......8-12 every
Thursday, no cover. Great club, good Italian food,
comfortable and the finest come down to play. 2 miles
east of the 405 (exit Victory) and 2 miles north of the
101 (exit Woodman).

Thanks, Sheila! Looking forward to seeing it. Any truth
to the rumor that the Victorians are really Darlene and
company? I haven't ever seen a pic of them. And in
reading the index of groups in the Clemente book (thanks,
John. R.), I see the Secrets are not covered...? One of
my favorites... oh well!

Best,
Jimmy C.
