As far as I can remember, we did the Gene McDanials
dates at MGM studios (later called the Osmond Bros.
Studio) on Fairfax, that's what I recall about Gene's
dates, nice man, good music.

Thanks for the info on the charts of Mel Carter, I had
forgotten the arrangers on that stuff.

HI Claudia,
Mel's "When A Boy Falls In Love" was produced and
co-written by Sam Cooke for Derby, a subsidiary of his
SAR label.
According to Daniel Wolff's biography of Sam the song
was originally intended for Pat Boone but "neither Boone
or others who tried could make the song work".
Sam then tried it with Mel Carter who'd been discovered
by Sam's partner,J W Alexander.
Apparently Sam had to teach Mel exactly how to sing the
song as Mel wanted to be a jazz singer and wasn't happy
with having to sing a pop song.
"Melvin", Cooke told him "you got the best pair of pipes
in the world. But don't let anybody ask me who my favourite
singer is" he added, laughing , "cause I'll tell them me!"
I'd imagine the Derby catalogue is controlled, like SAR,
by Alan Klein so don't hold your breath waiting for a
CD release
Mel had two follow up singles and an album on Derby
but Mel's manager, Zelda Samuels, had an argument with Sam
over Klein's interference in running SAR so she left
and signed Mel to Imperial.
