Marty, Fantastic stuff, thanks very much for all the information. So it is possible that it was a make or break it for the radio station in early '70 prior to my introduction (cute word, huh?) into the US Army. I would love to find their version, as I remember I really like it. That is not to say I didn't like CTA, it is just a personal preference. I thought I might have it from my DJ copies of 45s but no luck. Thanks again for helping me to take a more informative walk down memory lane. Mick: I don't have a clue. I worked opposite them in 1963 in New York at the Times Square Hotel. That was the first self-contained girl group that I ever saw. They were pretty damn good. Didn't Goldie go on to be the lead singer for a horn group called Ten Wheel Drive? Jim -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

With apologies to Bo Diddley for appropriating his title for a horrid pun (he's 75 years old this year, by the way), here's more "Bringin' It To Jerome[s]": Martin, thank you for posting "Respectable" by the Chants, which I think even eclipses the Isleys' version. And "Kiss Me Goodbye," the flip of the original, is a really neat doo-wop ballad not of the standard chord structure. I'd forgotten the record was reissued on MGM; I have it on the original label, Tru-Eko of Brooklyn, NY, with a hand-drawn label design! And Mick, thank you for the photo - I'd never known anything about the group before, especially the Pete Antell membership. Martin: > The only credit for John(ny) Abbott on a Jerome Brothers > doo wop 45 that I can find is The Camelots, "Pocahontas"/ > "Searchin' For My Baby", Ember 1108, which just pre-dates > their first recordings for Reparata. "Pocahontas" is a superb track - a novelty that really works. By the way, if anyone here likes acapella doo-wop, I recommend the Camelots' "Don't Leave Me Baby"; unlike most early acapella, where the listener really misses the band, I think they do a great job being complete unto themselves. The Fifth Estate CD can be found at http://www.bostonskylinerecords.com/catalog.html , Wayne Wadhams' label. Scroll down to BSD 116, "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Back," credited to "The Fifth Estate and D-Men," featuring "28 Singles, demos, and jingles, 36 page booklet filled with studio and on-tour photos. A real portrait of the life of a hit pop-rock group in the 1960s. A Goldmine Oldies Rave!" Kim: > The Beatles - Did you know there was a Beatles release on a 78 RPM > record? Yow! How can that be??!! Fred Shirkwater's tale of finding > this curiosity and determining it contains never-heard-before > outtakes IS NOT TO BE BELIEVED!!! Have you heard it? Has anyone here? What's it like? Can it be played to musica? Please?? There's more I'd comment on, but running behind again, so other more learned folks have beaten me to it. But I like the direction and topics we're into - and the Kane and Abel stories are great! What effect will this revelation have on her longtime fans? > Will they turn against her? Will her classic albums and singles > become more or less collectible now? Thoughts, anyone? In the UK on November 5th we celebrate Guy Fawkes' failed gunpowder plot with fireworks and bonfires. I'm gathering my Lesley Gore 45s, LPs and CDs, in fact my entire collection for a mass burning. I expect to be dancing round the fire shouting, "burn baby burn!" Seriously, I wouldn't think anyone would give a toss. It's not like she's becoming a bishop! On a related note, I'm back in contact with JD Doyle, a pal I knew best in the 80s when his Girl Group collection was the envy of the civilised world. Even today I regularly check his spreadsheet of 45s and LPs for label #s and titles etc. Anyway he's now left the macho world of Girl Group collecting behind and is devoting a large part of his considerable energies to a gay radio show. Not strictly S'pop material in the main but he has featured a number of records and artists that fit the remit, David and Jonathan's "Golden Wonder Boy", Debbie Burton's "What Ever Happened To Baby Jane" and Goldie & the Gingerbreads' "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" amongst them. Now I'm sure Mick knows but did you know that Carol Shaw - famed for "Jimmy Boy" on Atco - was really Carol MacDonald, lead singer and writer for Goldie & the Gingerbreads and later to be co-founder along with fellow Gingerbread member Ginger Bianco of the all women rock band, Isis? Well neither did I! But all this info and more is available on JD's excellent site: http://www.queermusicheritage.com/index.html Martin -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

It hasn't hurt Dusty Springfield's legacy any. If anything, the revelation of Dusty's sexuality -- which again was no secret to most who followed her career -- has cemented her status as a gay icon, and there's no reason that it wouldn't do the same for Lesley. 3. Anybody who has a problem with it is revealing much more about themselves than they imagine. S __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! It sounds like she's already well along the road to receiving the same treatment as becomes most other showbusiness stars who -- usually under tabloid pressure -- "out" themselves: they get their own talk show! One can only hope in this case, as I'll bet the lady has a lot to say. Martin Roberts; > ...I wouldn't think anyone would give a toss. It's not like > she's becoming a bishop! So, her sexuality might be more of an issue if she was a member of the clergy, then? David Bell: > Who gives a left handed toss about Lesley's sexuality when > her music is so great? You will be adding ambidexterity to your CV, of course, David? Seriously, Lesley's composition "My Secret Love" was one of the musical highlights of the movie Grace Of My Heart, agreed? Anyone up for a Lesbian Love Songs List? I know how you boys like lists. I shall start the ball rolling with "Keep It Confidential", co-written by Ellie Greenwich for her friend Nona Hendrix. In many cases they had the British hit and the original is not known Matt Monro is another Cilla Black started out this way on records. Re Lesley Gore: She is remembered if at all in Britain for only one hit Its My Party maybe You Don't Own Me and nothing else. What other hits did she have in the US, does she have aWeb site ? So, she is probably Gay, so what she wouldn't be unique in show business. I hope she is happy with her life whatever the facts. I have an LP somewhere must dig it out. Re Capitol Records and labels they own: Angel are British recordings released in the US I have some bought in the US and they are classical and opera records many are great records by great artists. Melodiya was a label of the USSR released in the UK under license and the US too. Seraphim was another label like the other two but re-releases maybe cheaper prices. Rendered there, I am proud to say, by my good friend Miss Lily Banquette (aka Liz Cox), of Combustible Edison fame. I'm sure she'll be delighted to read Mick's assessment of her collaborative work. > Anyone up for a Lesbian Love Songs List? I know how you boys > like lists. The line "Saddest thing in the whole wide world / Is to see your baby with another girl," from "Sally Go Round The Roses," takes on a Sapphic tint when sung by a male, as it's occasionally been over the years.
