"John" wasn't a group but a solo singer named John Paul Jones
- if I remember rightly that's how the UK issued was credited.
I think he was Australian.
The reason for the name change in the US is probably because
Cotillion was a division of Atlantic so they didn't want anybody
to think it was John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.

Hi Phil:
Well, I'm sure he didn't think it sounded commercial, but he was
also concerned about singing lyrics that he didn't understand.
I'm no Mike Love fan, but according to Brian, the only Beach Boys
that were enthusiastic about "Smile" were Dennis and Al.
I'm smiling too!

The single was also issued in the UK by John Paul Joans, and in
the US as "Jon" and also "J.P. Jones"....both on the Cotillion 45.
I'm not certain if John Paul Joans is really John Paul Jones, arranger
for Donovan before joining Led Zepplin, or not, but all of the music
was written and performed by Eric Stewart, Lol Crème and Kevin Godley,
all who became 2/3's of 10cc.

Tom, haven't heard this and can't give you much info. on it.
"R H Brams" - that's Robin Hood Brians, a one-time rockabilly singer
who became a studio owner/producer in Tyler, Texas in the mid-60's.
His best known work is probably with Mouse and The Traps, a Texan
band who had a hit with the Dylan meets garage "A Public Execution"
on Fraternity.
Doesn't really help you with "Fool's Paradise" but it gives you
a probable location origin for the record.

A guy called John Paul Jones had a hit in, I think, 1971 or
thereabouts, with "The Man from Nazareth". His name conflicted
with the well-known guitarist, so he had to change the surname
to "Joans", and when that didn't satisfy his namesake, he finally
became known as "John". And then he disappeared without a trace
from the English and European scene ...

It seems to me that the vocal on the current version
of 'You Are My Sunshine' is a 1967 Brian vocal - wasn't
there one on a bootleg? If it's not, then it's a darn
good imitation of 1967 BW. Anyone else notice this? Or
am I hearing things?

I recall seeing a clip of her singing this song and being
introduced by Groucho - was it on "Hollywood Palace"?
Was she singing live then too?

Bob, I second your motion for more 50's and early 60's articles
in Discoveries magazine. My latest renewal is about to run out
and have been thinking of giving it up because there is so little
interest for me in it anymore. At least it will be nice to see the
BOBBY VEE Article!

After a bit more digging it turns out the singer's name was
John Paul Joans - UK release was on RAK 107 - Mickie Most's
label.
A few 10cc websites say that JPJ was an English comedian.
ASCAP lists the writers of "The Man From Nazareth" as
Godley, Creme, Stewart and "Reginald John Davidge" which is
more than likely the real name of John Paul Joans / John.

I don't know anything about what you're hearing, but the
'66-7 vocal was by Dennis ...

I really like "Why Need They Pretend?" from the film "For singles
only". It's a great softrock tune with a touch of bossa. Arranged
and conducted by Shorty Rogers. It's sad that there's no soundtrack
to the film. BTW, is it worth checking out? At least the title
sounds promising. (although I have to confess that I'm married)

Hi, I finally got my vinyl transfer stuff working and have
posted old news, Julie Budd's "All's Quiet on West 23rd Street"
45 from early 1968. Had to squeeze this on Musica before the gap
disappeared!! Hope whoever wanted this still needs it. Enjoy!

Well, she hasn't got her father's voice, that's for sure,
but did she have his looks? I'd love to see a photo of her.
Can anyone oblige?

If anyone's interested, I have prepared an Excel spreadsheet
of all of the pre-10cc recordings and productions....including
all recordings that any of the four member were involved with.
It's pretty complete.
Email me offlist and I'll attach it for you.
There's lots of really interesting records listed (including
The Mindbenders, all Graham Gouldman's compositions, and all
the 'Strawberry' productions.

Bill Buchanan (formerly of Buchanan and Goodman proto-sampling fame)
released a cover of "The Thing" circa 1961 on Gone Records, using a
Witch Doctor/Chipmunks-like speeded-up vocal on the chorus. Was that
the one?

That or the fact the future Led Zep bassist/keyboardist was a well
known session musician long before he joined the group.
Even so, it gives rise to the limitless possibilities of a UK
supergroup featuring (in no particular order):
Paul Jones
John Paul Jones
John Paul Joans
and of course
John Paul Georgeandringo!

And here I was thinking the Man from Nazareth was Jesus, and John
was just taggin' along...

Yes, it is the same Bleus. Eddie Hinton co-wrote Good Morning,
Love (with R. Gregg), but its B side, What'cha Gonna Do was
written by D. Fritts and J. Reid. Eddie co-produced both sides
with Paul Ballenger. If you have the Amy single please play it

I have no idea if this is the correct answer, but I have a
copy of this song on 45 by Rolf Harris.

There was a Wisconsin band (yes, there's that Wisc. stuff again!)
called John Paul & the Liberators, which was a play on
Lennon-McCartney along with Paul Revere & the Raiders.
