Here's one not on your list:
Saundra Franklin "Just A Little Touch Of Your Love"/"It's Okay"
(Guyden 2106, 1964) Both songs written by Russ Titelman, the
latter Artie Kornfeld.
And here are some additional versions:
Julie Grant "Baby Baby (I Still Love You)" (UK Pye)
Dusty Springfield "I Wanna Make You Happy" (Philips)
Lesley Gore "What Am I Gonna Do With You (Hey Baby)" (Mercury)
Skeeter Davis "What Am I Gonna Do With You (Hey Baby)" (RCA)
Better yet, I've just posted to musica Tony Wine's "A Toy Is
Only Made For Play". It's from an unissued Screen Gems acetate
recorded at Dick Charles Studios c.1964. The song was written
by Russ Titelman and Howard Puris, aka Tony Powers. It sounds
to me like a demo made for Dusty Springfield, and quite likely
was. The disc belongs to my oppo Malcolm Baumgart. Listen to it

Hi S'poppers,
A new feature article -- Ron Dante Remembers The '60s . . . And
He Was There! -- has just been installed on the S'pop website.
The piece was written by our very own Laura Pinto, who else?
Access the article via the homepage @ http://www.spectropop.com

Subject: A Jaynettes Question
I was listening to XM Radio this morning with the "'60s on 6" when they played "Sally Go 'Round the Roses".
I know that this group has been brought up in S-pop before, but I am curious about something. The disc jockey said that the Jaynettes were from Chicago. I thought they were from New York, and that that song had been recorded at Mirasound Studios, when Brooks Arthur was still house engineer there. I know Artie Ripp produced that song.
Can anyone shed a light on this for me? And exactly who were the Jaynettes? And did they do anything other than "Sally?" I never hear their names on any revival shows or concerts.

Terry Knight (Knapp) was not Jack The Bellboy on WJBK, to the best of my knowledge.
I remember Terry when he was a DJ at 50,000 watt powerhouse CKLW Radio, Windsor, Ontario-- before his recording career.
I remember going to Bob-Lo Island as a high schooler and seeing Terry doing his show from a booth on the island. I was so enthralled that I knew then and there
that I wanted to do that someday.
I became a DJ at WSSB, Durham, NC during my senior year at UNC, and during the
summer after graduation. The remotes we did there were from small shopping centers and marine retailers.
I recall one Saturday afternoon when I was perched up on a pontoon boat mounted on a trailer in the marine dealer's outdoor display area.

Subject: surf's up! - SMILE at Disney Hall
A few personal highlights from last night's (Nov. 3) Brian Wilson "SMILE" show at Walt Disney Hall, LA...
- Brian audibly beating his chest while singing the line:
"...and I can feel how right she'd be for me" ("Good Vibrations")
- Van Dyke Parks recieving a standing ovation when he walked into the hall. Later on (as an audience member, Parks danced the Swim during "I Get Around"
- the unabashed exuberance of the backing ensemble (how many instruments can these folks play?)
- the Gospel majesty of "Sail On Sailor"
- the fire hats and vegetables stowed under the chairs of the string section
- having the realization several times during the show "Hey, this is THE Brian Wilson...singing Brian Wilson songs!"
Of course, the whole "SMILE" part of the show was magnificent. Along with being an amazing piece of music, it was also great theater...the lighting and clever use of props added much to "SMILE."
Experiencing it LIVE made me realize even more how rich and multi-dimensional the various parts and harmonies are-- truly heavenly!
Heavenly as well was hearing the band do justice to many of Wilson's early surf and hot rod songs. I'm not sure if elegant Walt Disney Hall was built for songs
like "Surfin' USA,", but it sure seems like it.
It was easily the best concert I've ever attended...very emotional, full of humor and a lot of fun.

Hola Everybody!
I´ve been humming "A Toy Is Only Made For Play" all day. I love it. The song reminds me a little of "I Only Want To Be with You."
Mick, thanks for playing it. Like Declan, I also have a crush on Russ Titelman´s early compositions, particularly those written with Gerry Goffin. They often are beautifully melancholic.

Actually, the Tokens gave F-G-G the multitrack and their permission for them to
erase the lead vocal and replace it with the Angels' lead vocal.
Why they did this is anyone's guess.

Subject: Gary Lewis' "Sealed With A Kiss"
We got several posts about the Gary Lewis version of "Sealed With A Kiss." To forever settle this burning question, here's three S-popper responses:
Possibly there's a Gary Lewis LP cut, as pop/rock singers at the time
frequently covered recent hits on their albums. Of course, it probably
doesn't matter since (Al Kooper would know more about this) Ron
Hicklin was more responsible for the lead vocals on Gary's records
than Gary himself was.
Joe Nelson
---------------------------
Actually, although Brian had the bigger hit with it, Gary also
recorded "Sealed With A Kiss".
Phil H.
---------------------------
Yes, it was Hyland, but also Bobby Vinton and Gary Lewis had hits with the song.
Awhile back, I noted that Lewis' original vocal was the worst lead vocal I
had ever heard for a song that made the Top 20 on Billboard's charts.
I stand by that statement even after hearing Lewis perform the song live. He still isn't much of a singer, but with a deeper voice, he nearly carried the song off.
In fact, another Spectropopper wrote back to me to say that Lewis cringes at his own vocal on that song to this day.

Would that be the Sonny Childe (of S. C. & The T.N.Ts) who was
also/really R. B. Greaves of "Take A Letter Maria" (Atco-'69) ?

Subject: Kurt Edelhagen plays Jimmy Webb
HI!!
I'm looking for any info I can find on this 1969/70 Quincy Jones
arranged LP with 11 Jimmy Webb tracks for German bandleader Kurt
Edelhagen and his big orchestra. Tracks are:
Side 1: Galveston; Where's The Playground Susie; Mac Arthur Park;
If You Must Leave My Life; Honey Come Back; Wichita Lineman.
Side 2: Up, Up And Away; By The Time I Get To Phoenix; Didn't We;
Sunshower; Evie.
Please I will be most grateful if somebody can provide me with
info on this record & any kind of info on Kurt Edelhagen, how
come he did decide to cover a whole album of Jimmy Webb material?
Was Webb popular in Germany?? I would love to know more on Quincy
Jones German phase. I'm putting together a whole database on that
record for a label so any info will be most welcome.
Thanx

Who was the producer? Santos wrote "Candy Girl" for the Seasons,
and also recorded as "Larry & The Legends - Larry & The Legends"
with the Seasons on backing vox on Atlantic. I'm also curious
about "Cheryl Ann" - Tim Tam and the Turn-Ons also recorded a
Seasons-soundalike of the same name.
I'm a sucker for anything with Crewe's classic "Stomp-Clap"
formula so if you could post the record I'd love to hear it!
