Subject: Today in London; 4th of July in northern New Jersey
My prayers, best hopes and condolences go out to our friends in the
UK, specifically in London. I hope all our Spectropoppers are well,
and that the perpetrators of today's disgraceful incidents will be
found and dealt with appropriately and swiftly. Our hearts and best
thoughts are with you.
July 4th in northern New Jersey was a good place to be this year.
Gary "U.S." Bonds performed at the Summit, NJ fireworks; he and his
band rocked hard and well and were very, very good. I didn't see
them, but The Teenagers (as in "Frankie Lymon and the") performed in
Hackensack. Coming soon locally (I forget where): The Duprees and the
Capris.
A bit out of our era, but the roots come from then: I took a drive
and walk around Asbury Park, NJ a couple of days ago. "Madame Marie's"
fortune-telling stand (from Springsteen's song "Sandy") is still
standing, and there's a major urban renewal project going on. The
Convention Center is still up and having concerts periodically, but
the Casino is an empty mess, although it looks restorable with a lot
of work.
I'm behind again, but will try to catch up soon.

Dear Groovy Spectropop Nation:
I am very sorry to hear about the terrible events that has happened
today in London....I hope and pray that you are all okay...I am very
concerned about you all. I pray that your country heals quickly and
don't let the stupid assholes that did this terrible, stupid and
vicious act think they have gotten the best of you. Right after 9/11
every New Yorker put a flag on their door and cars and everywhere
else to show the terrorists that they could never get us down...so
get out your flags and and lift up your hearts and know people all
over the world are praying for you to be okay and strong. God Bless
You All.
(In response to some of the emails as to how I am doing...I am doing
okay...healing well, but just this last two and a half months making
a huge move... and in another few weeks I will be going for a second
surgery....so even though I am not writing...I read your posts every
few days and keep you all in my heart. As soon as I memorize my new
address...I promise to send it to all of you who asked.)
Much Love and Light,

Hi, To anyone that reads this article, I just wanted to say that
Jimmie Haskell and I were both arrangers during those great days. Yes
we were competitors, but I have the utmost respect for his talent. I
talk to him from time to time, and we have remained friends. His body
of work through the years speaks for itself.

Maybe common knowledge, but we should mention Jimmies' cinematically
gamut-running (from dark to delicate) arrangements on at least 3 of
Bobbie Gentry's Capitol LPs:
Ode To Billy Joe (entire album)
The Delta Sweete (with Shorty Rogers on some) and
Fancy (except for 2 Tommy Oliver ones)
Pass The biscuits, please...

Carson Parks obituary from http://www.Lastlinkontheleft.com
Carson Parks - Singer/songwriter
Although it was a song he both hated and defended, "Somethin'
Stupid," Frank Sinatra's duet with daughter Nancy was his first gold
single. Carson Parks, brother of musician and film composer Van Dyke
Parks, wrote that song as well as "Cab Driver (Drive by Mary's
Place)" for the Mills Brothers.
In 1960, Parks performed on the soundtrack of the John Wayne film
"The Alamo." Two years later he revived a group he formed after
university, the Steeltown Two, this time with his brother Van Dyke.
Carson then formed the Greenwood County Singers, soon marrying fellow
member Gaile Foote. Parks and Foote released an album together which
included "Somethin' Stupid".
Frank Sinatra heard the song and played it to his daughter's
producer, Lee Hazlewood. It was Hazlewood who suggested father and
daughter Sinatra sing it as a duet. The song reached Number 1 in
April, 1967 and stayed there for four weeks.
That the song was Frank's first gold single was due to the fact that
the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which oversees
the awarding of gold and plantium records, didn't start issuing the
awards until the late 1950s, well after Sinatra's biggest years and
after the singer had turned to acting. The first gold record
recipient was Perry Como for "Catch A Falling Star" in March, 1958.
Sinatra's biggest hits in the 1960s were "It Was a Very Good Year"
and "Strangers in the Night" (his previous Number 1 from the fall of
1966). Sinatra had earned 10 gold albums by the time "Somethin'
Stupid" was released.
Frank loathed the song and only did the duet upon Nancy's personal
request. It was said he never performed it in concert. However, he
vigorously defended the song when it came under attack by some who
claimed it had something to do with incest.
One story suggests that Parks wrote "Somethin' Stupid" after a bet
with another songwriter about whether a song's title could affect its
popularity despite the strengths of lyrics and melody. Sinatra was to
record another of Parks' compositions, "Open For Business As Usual"
but when the session was cancelled, the song went to Jack Jones.
"Somethin' Stupid" has been a duet a number of times since the 1960s,
most recently in 2001 with Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman.

Gary, he's some more detailed info. on their first two singles:
Amy 999 - THE ENCHANTED FOREST (10/67)
8312 YOU'RE NEVER GONNA GET MY LOVIN' (Mort Shuman,Kenny Lynch)
8313 SUZANNE (Leonard Cohen)
Prod : Mort Shuman for Variations in Sound Productions
(UK : Stateside SS2080, Jan 68)
Variations 50010 - THE ENCHANTED FOREST (06/68)
8686 I'M NOT THAT KIND OF GIRL (The Enchanted Forest)
8687 THE WORD IS LOVE
Prod / arr : Mort Shuman
I don't, as yet, know who made up the group but I'm pretty sure they
were from the US - probably the New York area.
When "You're Never .." was issued in the UK on Stateside Record
Mirror printed a promo photo of them in their "New Faces" feature ..
if I remember rightly the pic was of five (maybe four) girls in a
park wearing long dresses - I'd guess the photo was taken in Central
Park as it looked like the NY skyline in the background. If anybody
still has their collection of Record Mirrors that may give us the
names of the group members.
I'd really appreciate the full details of the second Variations
single as it's one I haven't come across before and I could do with
the details for my Amy-Mala-Bell Yahoo group/website. I'd be able to
date the record from the matrix numbers. Variations was distributed
by A-M-B.

Since this is Spectropop, and we're supposed to get things right, I
should correct my own recent reference to Luther Vandross's "A House
is Not a Home" as appearing on what I described as "his first solo
album". What I meant was his first solo album for Epic Records,
titled Never Too Much. I seem to remember that he had another album
out earlier, possibly on Atco. Sorry about that.
PS: Mick P and Tony Rounce are to be congratulated on Phil's Spectre

what a terrible name, but what a record!

Hola everybody,
This morning the postman made me happy. Heīs for me like a kind of
non-seasonal mutant Santa Claus (heīs terrifyingly ugly and
borderline but when he brings me a packet of records I always feel
like kissing him).
Today he brought me the wonderful "Philīs Spectre II: Another Wall Of
Soundalikes" and Iīve been fascinated the whole day listening to it.
Itīs a superlative collection, full of marvelous tracks that have
been perfectly sequenced, creating a kind of chain reaction effect.
Luckily the selectors have strategically inserted the lighter tunes,
because in some parts of the compilation the succession of songs
could be suffocatingly beautiful. The sound is impressive and it
includes a luxury booklet, plenty of color pictures, with very
interesting and very original notes, containing a lot of mini-
interviews of the protagonists of the tracks.
Itīs as exquisite as a bottle of Dom Perignon and much cheaper. Well,
I must go out to get some provisions.
Chao.

Funny that "I Found You" came up at this time. I was just playing Roy
Buchanan's Cd Malaguaena and was playing that tune. On the CD it says
Roy wrote the tune as a ballad, but never recorded it as one.
However, the tune is on there uncredited. I suspect it is the British
Walkers. The band that recorded it (CBS Studios in NYC) had nothing
to do with any Alberta band.
Roy and Bobby Howard started the band down in DC in Nov. 1964 to
capitalize on the British Invasion. Junior Gill and Mike Kennedy
filled out the band. There is a shot in American Axe, Roy's bio, on
page 82 of Roy (minus beard) and the band. Roy was replaced (how
could that be?) in Jan. of 1965.

I can remember seeing (?) Bobby Darin saying this years ago, and it
sounded a bit "embellished" then, and still does now. I wouldn't be
surprised at him being offered Spoonful material before they made it

The time has come,
The collector said,
To talk of many things:
Of Don Christy and Reb Foster,
Of Quetzals and "Thank You Thing"s
In other words, it is high time someone set about building as
comprehensive a collection as possible of Sonny Bono's non-Sonny &/or
Cher recordings. I, for one, must have dozens of records or CD tracks
all bearing his imprint (whether under his regular name or one of his
pseudonyms), primarily as producer and/or composer*, much of it from
his Specialty label days, and I'm sure many of you have at least as
many others in your's. Don't you think a CD set of all of these
together would make for a fascinating, thrilling and even often
revealing listen? Besides that, don't you think some enterprising
reissue label would want to consider a release of the best of these,
and, moreover, that Sonny's work deserves same?
What I ask, then, is that you jot down for me all the Don Christy, the
Don & Dewey, the Larry Williams, the "Koko Joe," the Wynona Carr, the
Fiends and whatever other Bono-fondled records you know of, and send
the results on to me. If you can also offer access to the records you
report, so much the better. From that, I will try to gather sides and
build them into a CD, or set of CDs, which I will then send you a copy
of. Even if we don't come close to gathering the whole lot of them,
building just a single solid CD's worth might be rewarding enough,
and, as I said, if the results seem to warrant it I can then try to
pitch a similar set to one of the reissue labels.
One side note: although many of Sonny's "Quetzal" tracks appear as
flips to S&C-related records, I think an all-Quetzal mini-set could
form an interesting adjunct to this project, so please include those
with your lists, even if they are Sonny, Cher or Sonny & Cher
flipsides.
I would be remiss if I didn't wrap this request with a reminder to
send your Sonny lists to me OFFLIST ONLY. And, that I thank you in
advance for your Sonny time.
