Subject: Early Sly; Pat Lewis and a suggestion
Hola everybody,
Phil Milstein asked:
> I saw on Ace's "Phil's Spectre II" page, as a "similar" release,
> for "Precious Stone: In The Studio With Sly Stone, 1963-65," really
> caught my attention (and, now that I think of it, almost ties back

Hola Phil. I like that record, itīs full of exuberant and exciting
tracks, most of them previously unreleased and the notes by Alec
Palao are very informative and interesting. Many of the tracks have
a "work in progress" ambient that I like very much. Continuing with
Sly, thereīs another compilation of early Slyīs tracks that was
issued by the label VampiSoul that is also interesting (although the
sound, notes and presentation are rather poor). it included some
tracks in doo wop style, and a song that I like very much, "Honest"
that in the compilation is credited to Sly, but I canīt believe that
he could be the singer, maybe itīs a track by Gloria Scott and the
Tonettes. The collection also contains the beautiful "Yellow Moon" in
which Sly sounded very teeny and sexy.
And talking about sexy voices, these days Iīm in love with "Warning"
by Pat Lewis, a song I found in a Detroit Soul compilation. I think
Pat is a girl, but Iīm not completely sure about it. Anyway I love
her/his voice.
Changing the subject, when I was reading Simonīs interesting comments
about the elusive definition of a Spectorīs soundalike, I thought how
relative the "danceability" of a song can be. For me the real problem
with some frantic rhythms, popular among some Northern soul
aficionados is that you need to be dressed in gym clothes to be able
to dance to them properly.
And finally, a suggestion for "Philīs Spectre III" (Iīm hoping that
future releases donīt lose the sixties spirit), "Out of The Picture"
by Marcia Strassman (Uni 1967). Can you dance to it, Simon?
Chao.
Julio Niņo.

Not sure if this one counts as it about collecting baseball cards,
but it's a cracker..
Jeff Foskett - Baseball Card Fever (track 2 on his Limited edition
early album The Other Takes - New Surf NC 96 - 1011 - try the New
Surf Website http://www.new-surf.com
Baseball Card Fever is an absolutely full blooded Beach Boys cop from
circa '65 - great song and performance - I'd reckon most folks here
would love it.

Looks like we will be hard pressed to get legit DVD releases of our
old TV fave music episodes and performances. The costs are out of
this world for DVD releases, unfortunately. Most of us here have
some video that is not available commonly (even on VHS) and would
hope they will see these performances in the new DVD medium the way
they should look! Don't hold your breath. Here's the story:

Just out of curiosity, why don't people think much of allmusic? I
admit to have a vested interest since I am an editor there but it
would be enlightening to find out. I heard the Al Kooper CD too and
thought it was pretty good. No patch on his early solo albums but
highly listenable just the same.

Subject: Re: Neon Philharmonic
I have been asked off-list concerning the commercial promo 45 by The
Neon Philharmonic. So I thought the info I gave may be of interest
for anyone else on the list:
I have a 45 disc (7") which has the same 50 seconds commercial on
both sides (mono). I'ts a promo on Warner Bros.-Seven Arts Records.
Catalogue Number is PRO 340 (9572). This is written on the label:
"radio commercial for warner bors.-7 arts single - wb 7311 "no one is
going to hurt you" the neon philharmonic". It starts off with the
beginning of morning girl. Then the speaker informs you that the
group, who had a "smash hit" with morning girl has a new single out
now. Then a snippet of "no one is going..." gets played. Skipping
through my collection showed up a New Zealand pressing of "no one is
going to hurt you" backed by "you lied". I don't know if it has been
released in the US as well?!?
Other singles by the Neon Philharmonic I own are:
morning girl / brilliant colors (US)
clouds / snow (US promo)
got a feelin' in my bones / keep the faith in me (US promo)
I also have a "solo" 45 by Tupper Saussy and once had a Neon
Philharmonic 45 from the mid or late 7Ts, which in my humble opinion
couldn't compete with the older ones, thus I sold it. Shame on me :(

I was once told that she was Francis's sister and hieress to the ice
cream empire in South East England. Bloody great singer though!

It's been a long time since I looked there, and I only looked a few
times, so my comment might not mean much by now, but:
1. IIRC, some of the info I looked at wasn't very accurate.
2. IIRC, there was some info that (at the time) was only likely to be
from something I wrote, but no source was credited. It would have
been nice if it were.

Ha! Like Richard Baskin, heir to the Baskin-Robbins fortune, over
here. I haven't heard his name in a while, but in the late '70s he
was a fairly hot commodity as a film composer and music supervisor,
working mostly with the Robert Altman/Alan Rudolph axis, as well as
with Barbra Streisand.
Rocky Road, anyone?

My two cents ... It is full or errors and much of it is simply
unreliable as a reference. (I use to send in corrections and
updates, but it was a waste of time and energy.) Admittedly some of
the reviewers and their reviews are entertaining and informative;
others are little more than garbage.

Terrific choice, Julio - B-side of "The Flower Children". The music
track sounds more 1964 than 1967; was this lying around the studio
for a while before Marcia got it? Come to think of it, this and many
others we've suggested have been on the "Touch the Wall of Sound"
series... have the folks at Ace been looking there?

Subject: The Devonnes / La'Shell and the Shellettes
Anyone know what happened to that article from Spectropop about the
Devonnes?
Also does anyone have any info on La'Shell and the Shellettes? I've
had an mp3 (Northern Soul) by them called "You Better Check
Yourself." I know it was released on Eagle records. Does anyone know
when? And also...on a CD "A Soldier's Plea" there is another song I
have never been able to find by them called "My Soldier Boy Over
There". Was this the a or b-side to the other song? Anyone know what
it sounds like? Is it Northern Soul or a ballad like the Fawns "Wish
You Were Here With Me?"
Any info, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
James
