Subject: Ooh Baby Baby Washington
I've had Baby Washington's version of "You And The Night And The
Music" on rotation all day. As a connoisseur of big city soul *and*
vintage Hollywood movie songs, I regard this record as one of the
best of its type. Fred Astaire would agree with me, I'm sure.
Are there any Baby Washington fans/collectors out there? Must be! If
so, maybe you can assist me with a rather brain-taxing project. In a
nutshell, they're as rare as hens' teeth, but I'm hoping someone on
planet S'pop owns copies of the following 45s:
Baby Washington:
"Ah-Ha" (J&S 1607/1608, 1958)
"Hard Way To Go" (J&S 1619/1620, 1958)
"(Love Me) Or Leave Me Alone"/"Been A Long Time Baby" (J&S 1001, 1963)
Ideally, I'd like to buy copies of the records, and would be willing
to pay the going price. Failing that, it would be great to hear the
tracks, see label scans and discover who wrote the songs, etc. By any
chance, are any of them available on CD somewhere. Thanks in advance.
Anyway, back to that gorgeous Sue label 45 - fantastic drums!
Hey la,
Mick Patrick

Yet another reason Long John was cool:
Long John was a celebrated guest at folksinger Ewan MacColl's
Singer's House sessions. Among the many rules MacColl dished out was
his insistence that singers only perform their own material (i.e.
traditional songs from their own local area). But this rule was
waived for one singer only: Long John was allowed to perform blues
stuff.

Subject: Reasons Why Long John Baldry Was Cool
I saw Long John Baldry in 1964 in the Marquee (London) with Sonny Boy
Williamson and a kid who was then known as Rod "The Mod" Stewart.
Baldry was in a time warp then and never escaped. He was too bluesy
for his era as was Alexis Korner and people like Zoot Money, all of
whom had massive talent but whose choice of music was simply out of
fashion. Rod Stewart was utterly hopeless but hugely enthusiastic. He
knew how to follow a trend and made the most of a small amount of
talent.

Hi friends, I was wondering if any S'Poppers plan to attend the Mike
Smith Benefit at B.B.Kings in NYC on August 2. I plan to attend from
Nashville and I was hoping to say "hello" to those that are members
of our great group. Also, are there any clubs with bands that play
50's & 60's in NYC? I'd like to go hear one.
Thanks,
Steve Jarrell

Subject: Al Kooper (+ others) in New York
One of the guys I work with is a big Al Kooper fan. He was talking
about going down to New York to see Al at BB King's, and since I'll go
to New York at the drop of a hat, I asked him when it was. He said
"September". Well, when I went to Al's site, I discovered it was July
12th. I did check out the BB King site, and at the risk of sounding
like a commercial, they have some great upcoming acts, including The
Zombies, Jefferson Starship, Rick Derringer and Ronnie Spector (not
the same night). Plus many others, and a lot of tribute bands. The
Zombies tickets were more than I'll spend to see anyone, but the
Ronnie Spector tickets weren't too bad. I'd rather see Al than any of
the others, but if any Spectropoppers are interested in seeing any of
the shows, especially the Ronnie Spector one, let me know. I'm always
game for an excuse to go to New York.

One more suggestion also from the Eighties: "Tonight you're mine
baby" by Ronnie Spector, a rare cut from the Just One of the Guys
movie soundtrack. Not available anymore. A great Spector sounding
track.

Subject: Lesley Gore: TV and radio updates
On behalf of Lesley Gore and the band, thank you all for your warm
embrace of Ever Since at press, radio, and live music venues. This
record represents another major step in a Hall of Fame caliber
career, and you are among the first on board.
Below is a list of events that are in the works for Lesley. In
addition to the many appearances she’s already had, we are excited to
announce that she will be on WNBC's Live At Five with Sue Simmons
tonight between 5 and 6pm. Also, in the next two weeks, she will be
taping World Café with David Dye, Chuck D.’s On The Real for Air
America, and The Leonard Lopate Show on WNYC. Among press successes,
a Jim Farber profile in the Sunday Daily News hit newsstands
yesterday, and a Ms. magazine four-page Q&A with Kathleen Hanna from
Le Tigre will land in September. Many more irons are in the fire, and
we will keep you up to date as they confirm.
On the live front, despite not having played New York City since
1992, three shows at Joe’s Pub sold out immediately, and two encore
performances have been added, August 1st and August 15th. The national
touring itinerary continues to expand, and is filling in well beyond
the end of the year.
Lesley's bio, high-resolution photos, press material, and touring
updates are downloadable at: www.enginecompanyrecords.com/LesleyGore.

Hi Mick, Great One.. Baby Washington Is one of my favourite artists
(I have many of course). Her SUE Material is fantastic. I'm a Big fan
of BIG CITY SOUL also, I Love Powerful voices and a Great melody!!
"LEAVE ME ALONE" and "THERE HE IS" are 2 of her greatest and
fantastic Backings.
The Great LARRY WEISS (Laurence Weiss) wrote There He is with the
fantastic LOCKIE EDWARDS Jr. Larry and Lockie are 2 of my favourite
writers and wrote fantastic Pop/ r & B songs for R & B Styled artists
in the early 60's.
I'm sure many would know Larry also Wrote INSULT TO INJURY by Timi
Yuro, BROKEN HEARTED STRANGER by Adam Wade, YOU'RE NOT THE GUY FOR ME
by Ernestine Anderson on SUE Label (One of My Favourites of all time)
and many many more great songs...
He was later best known for the Smash Hit RHINESTONE COWBOY by Glen
Campbell. I had the privellege of corresponding with Larry a few
months Back. He's about to do a Musical Based on RHINESTONE COWBOY.
There is a lot more info about larry's Great songs...
Maybe someone could help me find Lockie Edwards Jr... I'm also trying
to locate him.
Back To Baby Washington....
I have both of these 45's, although Not great copies. I can post a
copy or send to anyone offline.
Any other fans of Big production teen/ pop, northern soul drop me a
line!! I'm always looking to trade and exchange music with.
Regards,
Ash

Apparently Unit 4+2, The Roulettes and The Zombies, were among a
number of Hertfordshire groups who were friends and sometimes cross-
pollinated. (Hertfordshire is a semi-rural area just North of London
and far from trendy then or now.). Notably, Ballard and Henrit of The
Roulettes worked with Unit 4 +2 on "Concrete and Clay" (the acoustic
guitar was played by Ballard) and several of their subsequent
sessions as well as having a couple of their songs recorded by the
group.
The Roulettes "I Can't Stop" for some reason is credited to "Lambert"
on the CD of Stakes and Chips but is the same song as the Unit 4+2
track credited to Moeller/Parker.

Arthur Lee and LOVE are scheduled to perform there in October. We've
already ordered our tix (which, I think, are incredibly reasonable to
see ARTHUR FREAKIN' LEE!!!).
Sorry you missed Al. He was sparklin'.
BBs is a wonderful venue--not a bad seat in the house. It's become
our regular hangout, as a matter of fact we're going there tomorrow
night to see Leon Russell.
Maybe see you there for Arthur Lee? You set the scene.
Florie
Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

I love the Sue Singles Collection CD. I really love the orchestral
sound of "That's How Heartaches Are Made" and love "Doodlin'" - Dusty
Springfield really had such good taste in the artists she chose to
cover!
Another smooth singer in her vein is a new fav of mine - Ketty
Lester. I love "Love Letters" and "Some Things Are Better Left
Unsaid" and just recently found "Please Don't Cry Anymore" and "Once
Upon A Time." What a voice! I've only seen two albums of hers
advertised on Amazon. Does anyone know if there is a good collection
of her work on CD?

Baby is thee Big City Soul Singer of the early 6T's. While I quite
naturally don't have the ones Mick is looking for on 45, I do have
"Handful of Memories" and "The Clock" on 45 as well as "That's How
Heartaches Are Made", later to be covered competently plus by
Loleatta Holloway on her 1976 Salsoul LP.
