Lindsey is too great. The album in question is called "Gift
Of Screws" and was something he has been working on for, well,
since "Out Of The Cradle". A couple of the songs "Bleed To Love
Her", "Red Rover", "Miranda", "Murrow", "Come" and "Steal Your
Heart Away" have all made it onto the new Fleetwood Mac album
(though in different versions of course). He also recorded covers
of three Stones songs - Gotta Get Away, She Smiled Sweetly and The
Singer Not The Song. I would have to say that if released as was,
"Gift Of Screws" would rank as maybe his best solo effort. I guess
he felt that by using the songs as Mac songs, they were to get a
wider audience. Great songwriter, producer and one amazing guitarist.

Subject: a sort of Chicago-related question
Hi gang,
It's been great hearing more about Chicago groups like
the Buckinghams, Ides Of March et al. I was too young
to know anything about these groups in their prime,
but it wasn't until I moved away from Chicago that I
realized how special and unique they were - and that a
group like the Buckinghams was never as big as the
Stones, despite what listening to Chicago oldies
stations might have you think!
I've searched for eons to the answer to this question,
and posted it on many forums, but no one's ever known.
But the large contingent of knowledgeable Chicagoans
here has me hoping my search will soon be over. In
the early 70's, Chicago's Saturday night scary movie
(which I think was on WGN) was called "Creature
Features". It featured as a logo a kind of back and
white cartooned still from "Phantom Of The Opera".
But what got me was the music - creepy as hell. I
never knew what it was, but for some reason I've come
to believe that it was an instrumental rock tune from
the late 50's / early 60's. It was kind of Link Wray,
but slower and creepier than "Rumble" - though the
basic sound was similar. I'd do anything to know what
it was, so I'm hoping someone older than me and from
Chicago will have the appropriate knowledge and can
lay it on me! I've bought several Link Wray CDs
hoping I'll stumble on it, but no luck so far. It may
not even be him.
Thanks!
Dee

There was a version narrated by Alan Barzman that was shown on
ABC the second time the film aired. And there's a version
narrated by Alan Thicke that was shown on the Disney Channel a
couple of times in the past few years.
A version narrated by Harry exists, as far as I know, only on
my bookshelf:-) I created it using Adobe Premiere, the album on
CD, and the film on home video. It was a lot of work because
Harry's story from the album isn't the same as the story in the
film - especially at the end when events occur in a different
order. And to be honest, it's not as interesting as the regular
film version because there's no dialog.

Sigh... I love this song. Bobby's baritone is so sweet on this
production that if I was a 16 year old chick at the time, I'm
sure I woulda rolled my eyes, sighed, and fainted. Meanwhile,
I was a ten year old boy who promently fell in love with his
neighbor's gorgeous 10 year old cousin. I wish I could remember
her name... more sighing
Was it the song or my percolating hormones? I still have the 45
in the picture sleeve. The hormones... I'll check under the bed.

Harry Nilsson recorded it for his 1973 album, A Little Touch

I have 2 versions of that song. The first is on a Connie Francis
album on MGM and the second by a real love of mine - Susan
Holliday aka Susan Singer (cue the groan Mick and Malcolm!) on
the British Columbia label. I think they're both Spectropoppers
but neither had a hit with the song.

Around the time Emitt's LP came out Clapton had his
solo LP out with "Bellbottom Blues", etc. It sounded
like Harrison. Add Badfinger and you have a festival
of Beatle clones.
I was one of the few people that probably saw Emitt
Rhodes live. He played the Main Point right after the
Dunhill lp. While standing in line for the second show
we heard him do several tunes. Just before the second
show he canceled it so we had to stand in line to get
a refund and got to hear a few more tunes. Since he
was scheduled to play the next night I held onto my
ticket. He canceled that show too! I was pissed to say
the least considering that they wouldn't refund my
money the second night. Lost a big $3, but I can say I
saw Emitt live. He disappeared from public view after
that.

Wow!! Thanks Ronnie for creating the interview and alerting
us to it, the website, the CD and the continuance of this
marvellous group, with their distinctive, gentle sound. Can't
wait to catch up with it. I thought I'd got all their records
including some Terry Fischer solos on Decca and Bal (same Terry?,
must ask them.) and the "Resurface" LP.

Subject: Bodie Chandler
As Mike E. and Country Paul have already pointed out, Bodie
Chandler is a true Spectropop hero. Not only did he
co-write all of the songs John F. mentioned in his original
post (Cannon Sisters, Dean Cannon, Diane Edmond, Ramona King
and Charlotte O'Hara) and most of Barry & the Tamerlanes'
output, but an examination of a Valiant discography (and
what a treasure-trove of a label that was) throws up many
more Chandler gems, all of which attest to his talent and
versatility:
"You Told Me", "I'm Gonna Forget You" and "Don't Believe A
Word" - the Tiaras
"Don't Go" – Danny & the Memories [& Barry & the Tamerlanes]
"Me & My Spyder" – the Reveres
"Down & Out" – George Freeman (one of the all-time northern
soul big city ballad spine-tinglers)
"I Wanna Be Your Lover" – the Cascades
"Say Goodbye To Donna" – Cory Wells
That's just to name a few. Outside of Valiant, add the
following to the list: -
"Tommy Go Away" and "I Wanna Know" for Carol Connors
"It's Over" and "She Don't Want Me Now" for the Lettermen
"Seein' Is Believin'" and "Halfway" for Eddie Hodges
(both Nitzsche-arranged, and Melcher-produced)
"On A Day Like Today" for Lesley Gore
I couldn't imagine a world without "I Wonder What
She's Doing Tonight". For that, and all the others,
Bodie, take a bow.
Ian
BTW, the music lawyer website containing the Cascades
article that Country Paul directed us to has more
equally interesting pieces on other artists, including
Steve Alaimo, Norma Tanega, Barry & the Remains and -
of particular interest to me, the Addrisi Bros - more
heroes from the Valiant stable who furthered the Spectropop
cause during their 60s period. Check out:

The question is was he alienated or did he alienate?
Probably some of both, I guess. Mr. Rhodes is not known
for having the best personality in the business.

Susan Singer's "Gee It's Great To Be Young" (US: London,
UK: Oriole) from 1962 was a great record. It would have been
such a good title for the UK's Helen Shapiro whom I thought
Susan sounded a lot like.
Don't worry about Mick and Malcolm as, with Memorial Day
weekend coming, I for one am looking forward to those
barbecued steaks that Susan sings about in this song.
One last thing, David, would you do the right thing and put
Frankie Vaughan up for "Nevertheless" as I have already cued
up Ronnie Dove.
Thanks,
Mike Edwards

Well Mike, shades of Patty and Cathy - they're cousins!
I too would like to put in a good word for Susan's
records, especially the Oriole sides – they all have that
pre-Beat teen exuberance that characterized Helen's records
from the same period. I believe Susan's "Bobbys Lovin' Touch"
– a kinda jazzy, slow swing – is in big demand on the
Popcorn scene. Can anyone confirm?
Susan appeared on TV about four or five years ago, looking
great and paying tribute to her cuz on Helen's edition of
"This Is Your Life". Helen returned the compliment: ("She's
a great singer!") Oddly enough, Susan was only introduced
under her married name – no reference was made to her career
as Susan Singer/Holliday. Strange - you'd have thought 9
singles and an album between '62 and '66 was worth a mention.

Ronnie, thanks for letting us know. I did enjoy your Bobby Vee
interview and didn't you speak with Diane Renay as well?
Looking at your notes and those on the Murmaids' website, I
don't see Cathy Brasher mentioned. Was she in the group or
just happened to share the same label, Chattahoochee?
Cathy Brasher cut at least three girl-group classics as a solo
artist: "Sh..Listen" (1965), "Too Late To Be Lovers" (1964) and
an absolute peak, "I'll Remember Jimmy" (also 1964). Maybe you
could ask about her.
Thanks,
