A cover of the (1/66 BB Pop: #5) Bob Lind record? Not sure which came first, since BL's was on World Pacific (meaning: I suspect they licensed it). Has either song been comped anywhere yet? The former, so I can compare Val's version to Bob's. The latter, cuz I can't remember WHERE my copy of the Bob Lind single is. :) - Gary Apollo! http://apollojams.com -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 3 Date: Sat, 21 Jun 2003 05:32:59 -0000 From: LB Subject: Looking for a song recorded I believe by Bill Deal and the Rhondels Have been trying to locate a copy of a song that I believe was recorded by Bill Deal and the Rhondels. However, I haven't seen it on any of the old albums. The title may have been "Can You Live Without Me". If my memory is correct, a musician named Freddy Owens was in some way connected with the song. The lyrics started out something like: Well goodbye was what you wanted... So goodbye was what I said... (there was some more here...I can't remember, then...) Can you live without me baby... Can you make it through the night... Can you live without me baby... Can you face the morning light... Any tips on locating a copy, or an mp3 would be greatly # appreciated. Thanks... -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

I think we all have to throw a big kiss at Sheila (a la Jim Lang on The Newlywed Game) for arranging such a gala affair. And it was a blast meeting Sheila, Mick, Jim, Bill, Lillian from The Exciters, and more people who I can't remember. As for Its My Party, what else can be said, they were simply unbelievable. What native talent, but more important, the hard work they must have put into their rehearsals really showed. Those intricate 4 part harmonies were dead on. For James Botticelli......James, you KILLED me when you played "Questions and Answers" by The In Crowd. One of my favorites. Did you know that they were really "The Eligibles" in disguise? So when's the NEXT party? :))) Mikey PS......I forgot who, but someone asked me why I looked like Frankie Avalon........I took it as a compliment.... -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 9 Date: Sat, 21 Jun 2003 22:22:17 -0000 From: Mike Edwards Subject: Pete Antell at Shindig NY Pete Antell was one of the guests at the Shindig Party in Manhattan on June 20th. Pete chatted with us and offered some background info on his hit record, "Night Time" (Cameo 234 from late '62). The song was sent over to Bernie Lowe at Cameo in Philadelphia before it was finished, to get his input. Bernie liked it exactly as it was and issued it, giving Pete his only Hot-100 entry as an artist. "Night Time" is now playing in musica and Pete; if you are reading this, what else did you think this great record needed? Pete went on to record for Bob Crewe's New Voice label, releasing the very tasty "Warm Smoke" in 1967. This was included on the ill-fated Dyno Voice double CD and is yet another reason to track that down. Pete's biggest chart action was with the Percells, whose girl-group classic, "What Are Boys Made Of" reached #53 in 1963. Mike Edwards -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

The concept would be > "recordings heavily influenced by Roy Orbison." Not of this era, but from 1983, is a superb track by one Tom Kimmel, "Bon Vivant" (CD: "Circle Back Home," Polydor 843133-2) which he dedicates to Orbison, and in my opinion is one of the best Roy Orbison songs he never did. While it doesn't have the grand crescendo, it is appropriately dramatic, has a very emotional pause, and comes as close to the Big O's voice as anyone living. There was also a song by Richard Cocciante, an Italian recording in English on (possibly) 20th Fox in the early '70s that was based upon two long dramatic builds and sung with "superheated vocals," and a 1950s hit by Gary Stites, "Lonely For You," which builds with an up-the-scale melody, one step per line. I've never heard the Waylon Jennings track you cite, "Love Denied," but would like to. On what album is it, please? Mike Edwards mentions: > David Box - If You Can't Say Something Nice (Candix) 1962 > Written by Roy Orbison-Joe Melson-Ray Rush It was great to meet you (and so many of us) in New York, Mike. Is this available on 45, LP or CD at a reasonable price? I've got David Box's "Little Lonely Summer Girl" (Jo-Ed, 1963), which is a cross between Orbison and Buddy Holly - and a superb record. I had it at the S'pop party, but didn't have time to play it. I know he's been discussed in this group before (he sang with the Crickets after Buddy Holly's death); there's a short but significant biography and discography at http://www.hotshotdigital.com/tribute/DavidBox.html Since last checking his information, there's now a David Box website run by his sister, Rita, at http://www.davidbox.net She has a nice rememberance of him, and there's a CD of his music (which sounds as though it has many demos, since he only released 5 45s in his short lifetime. (I wonder if this is the one Alan Karr mentioned....) Larry Shell: > my review of the Viva Las Vegas 2003 Rockabilly Weekender is > now online at the Rockabilly Hall of Fame website.... > http://www.rockabillyhall.com/LarryShellVLV6.html I think some of your review relates here - artists you mention such as Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones, Ruth Brown, Jody Reynolds, and the Bobbettes (!), even though some predate our general "time zone." And you've obviously done your homework to mention "Cad" Kadiston being a member of the Pastel Six ("Cinnamon Cinder"). Sort of a footnote to pop history, but a cool one!
