Hi,

As far as I know, Spector did produce the backing track of
this song, but not the Supremes, the Supremes' vocals were
recorded later.

The backing track was produced by Spector featuring Brain
Wilson on piano and was meant for a Ronettes version of
Don't Hurt My Little Sister, a Beach Boys song.

The same backing track was also used by the Blossoms and
Jay and The Americans.

I do not know the year of recording.

Let's see, if I remember correctly, "Things Are Changing"
was co-written by Phil Spector and Brian Wilson,
originally under another title . . . posssibly for The
Ronettes . . . it was recorded as an Equal Opportunity
promotion around 1966 . . . released by The Blossoms,
with Darlene Love on lead, natch . . . the same track
was later used by Diana Ross and The Supremes and Jay
and The Americans, who cut their own versions . . . Phil
Spector did the initial studio work, but final
production credits went to Jerry Riopelle.

I can only think of one answer song. Could it be Army
Green? I have no idea of the singer but remember the
title from somewhere.

Let me add some weight to your heretical outburst.....

In the early 80s I worked on a (never issued) compilation
project for ABKCO. I was in one of the labyrinth of demo
rooms in the Leiber-Stoller suite of the Brill Building
(a thrill in itself) which was no bigger than a phone
booth, and almost impossible to judge what you were
hearing. One day Alan Betrock wandered in brandishing a
3-track tape with a Gold Star label containing "Please Be
My Boyfriend". Even though the label details all looked
fine, I was not (and am still not) convinced it was one
of Phil's productions, or in fact The Crystals. My first
impression was that it was more Bob Crewe's style,
certainly the drum sound & playing would indicate that. I
still can't identify that vocal - I've heard talk that it
may be Pat, but it sounds more like early LaLa on a bad
day. Possibly a sound-alike? Also the backing vocals
sound as if it's the same girl tracked, and Phil would
never have let them pass by so off key. I listened to the
entire tape and didn't spot any familiar voices over the
talkback, which is unusual as Phil always has something
to say:-) So the jury is still out on this one. You can
save that "Tandoori Chicken" for two, until we're both
proved wrong! I ran off a quick rough mix which I have
posted to the files area.

In all this boyfriend talk I thought I'd throw in the
delightfully exuberant "I Want You To Be My Boyfriend" by
The Chic-Lets (posted to the files area). Although it is
not the Spector-Greenwich-Barry tune, it is well crafted
in the style of...and has a more authentic drum sound &
arrangement than the aforementioned 'Crystals' cut. My
favourite of this genre is the Chiffons "I Have A
Boyfriend" - you can rely on Jeff & Ellie to get the
naive sentiment just right!

Phil

PS - MICK, my version of "Unbelievable Guy" only lasts
2.46 - do you have a custom version?:-)

"In the Navy" by Village People?

I agree - it's a nice track, but it doesn't sound
much like a Spector production circa summer of 1964. It
sounds like it was done in New York and none of the
voices on the talkback sound like Spector. Maybe he had
laryngitis that day? Nah...

Ooh, Mick - you need a repeat-play turntable with varispeed.

Does anyone out there have this OFF THE WALL cd? If
anyone would like to trade a cd-r of it, I'm sure I have
some stuff you'd like. Were all the songs on that cd
produced by Spector or just written by him?

Hello Ron - The Jack Fitzpatrick/Jim Fogerty book is
called COLLECTING PHIL SPECTOR. Jim will tell you where
to get a copy.

Tell him Micky said "WATCHA MATE".
