He wrote about KHJ Boss radio AND some Jack Nitzsche custom made instrumental jingles. Well, he's kindly made them available to the site. These are not to be missed. Follow the link to the new Nitzsche Radio page. 2/ Any Paris Sisters Fans out there? Well, for the answer to a puzzling reply from Jack in his BOMP interview and a couple of surprises, follow the Record Reviews link. 3/ Record Of The Week is from everybody's favourite granny, Dora Hall, with her recording of "Hoochi – Koochi". I couldn't keep Christopher Monte "Giants Of Bombora" in place any longer! But I hope most of you got to hear it. Martin -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Would it be NFT? Thanks... Back to the Reflections - the mention of UK covers reminded me that I had put Peter's Faces pretty nifty version of "(Just Like) Romeo & Juliet" as track 4 on Ripples Vol 5 Beach Bash! I've gone and pulled that one out again. Peter was the same Peter Nelson who later graced The Flowerpot Men and White Plains. There is also another cover of the song by the wonderful Honeys on their Swedish LP "It's Like Heaven". Also, lets not forget that the Reflections benefitted from the arranging talents of the excellent Mr C Calello. No wonder we are all so hot for them! BTW I'm still looking for anyone with info, photos, or contacts for any musicians/venues/concerts/etc with a Sinatra connection. this group has thrown up some good contacts, but any more are most welcome via off-list mailings - Ta. Message: 3 Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 09:16:07 -0000 From: David Bell Subject: Brit girls photo I'm hoping that someone in the group will be able to help out with a photo that I've been trying to trace for many years now. Circa 1963/1964, a photo was published in the Daily Mail/Daily Express (?) of seemingly dozens of British girl singers. I seem to remember it was taken on the Embankment in London. I also remember Dusty, Julie Grant, Helen Shapiro and Susan Singer (there's a forgotten name) being on it. Since Beverley Jones has also been on my mind recently, I'm hoping that she will be featured too. Just the slightest hint of where and when for this item, I will go to the British Library, which holds copies of all newspapers from this time. According to my notes, both the Reflections on Crossraods and Tigre are different groups. Tigre + Went releases each have "In the Still Of The Night" on one side, so it's the same group. Dan: > David asks about the song Betty Betty Go Steady With Me. > It was recorded by the Archies. ref. http://community-2.webtv.net/pLuMcRaZy4rOn/archiesongs/page3.html > ....Two other songs recorded in the winter of 1969 during > the "Feelin' So Good" recording session didn't make it to > the show or record either. They were: "Betty Betty Go Steady > With Me", and "Are You Ever Coming Home"..... I recognize your information as coming from the PlumCrazy4RonDante website, whose claims are highly questionable. At any rate, Beverly Ross and Jeff Barry did NOT write any material for The Archies. The Archies recorded from 1968 to 1972; Ross and Barry only wrote together in the very early '60s, prior to his partnering with Ellie Greenwich. Furthermore, "Betty Betty" is not a Kirshner/KEC copyright, as all Jeff Barry songs recorded by The Archies were. There is no evidence that either this song or "Are You Ever Coming Home"(an Andy Kim B-side) were ever cut by The Archies, and I seriously doubt that they were. "Cheer Me Up", the Globetrotters song, is also listed on that website as an unreleased Archies recording, but Ron Dante has assured me that he never recorded it. > Also recorded in England at least twice, by Dickey Pride, > and by Stanley + Jeffrey Bird. What year did these recordings come out? Stuffed Animal -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

I guess what I need is a reference to my many 45s which I sometimes cannot find an accurate description. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Stuffed Animal asks (about Betty Betty): > Also recorded in England at least twice, by Dickey Pride, > and by Stanley + Jeffrey Bird. > What year did these recordings come out? I don't know. I found them via Google by entering the name of the song. One was a Spectropop note from a few years ago; the other was a British web site of rockabilly stuff I think. By the way, the source I cited that claimed the Archies recorded the song didn't claim the song had been written for them. I got the idea from the other sites that it was written a decade or more before the Archies were formed. ---Dan -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Ron, Check out the night owl site http://www.nightowlclub.com/ in my opinion the best site about the subject. The site also has a data base that you can type in songs, artists and labels it will come up with a price. Also Kev Roberts top 500 book of Norhern Soul is not only an informative book but a price guide as well. A well written and fun book to read from a person who dares to share the subject with other people. When it comes down to it, if your going to be collecting and/or dealing in 45's it's best to just buy the price guides. My good friend never wanted to invest in the books as they are expensive. He Eventually bought the John Manship's Northern Soul Record Price guide. If he didn't buy the price guide he wouldn't have found the $400.00 Ty Karmin 45 on the cover of the price guide. Spending the $25.00 is worth helping you find the rare and/or high priced items. The big problems with Northern Soul is that there so many schools of thought about what is and what isn't Northern soul. Top 500 book is a good place to start and get a basic undersatnding of the songs and History of Nortern Soul. I'm going to pick up that Bob Crewe "Jay" 45 on that Goldmine CD Vol #2 ASAP! I read about it in the book and I'm looking forward to hearing it. Thanks for the info! Cheers Leonardo -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Are they the same group? Well, the "Went" > Reflections aren't but the "Crossroads" group could be, and > the Tigre release is just so great! The Went 45 is out of Miami, and is a black group that played at the old Continental Club in South Florida -- no relation to the Detroit group. I believe the Reflections (post-Tony Micale) also recorded as "The High And The Mighty" on ABC: ABC 10821 Escape From Cuba/Tryin' To Stop Cryin' This was an early Dennis Lambert production. Lambert also produced The Spindles for ABC, and the other Reflections ABC tracks. He of course later teamed with Brian Potter, and had huge success with "Keeper Of The Castle", "Rhinestone Cowboy", etc. "Escape From Cuba" was a hot record for two weeks in Miami! It debuted at #50 on WQAM, jumped to #39 the week of July 9, 1966... and then was pulled from their airwaves (due to its subject matter, a touchy topic here in South Florida). My on-going list of WQAM/WFUN radio hits of the 60s (that did not hit the Billboard Hot 100) can be found here: http://pub64.ezboard.com/flimestoneloungefrm11.showMessage?topicID=5.topic Jeff Lemlich -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

It has it all: Oppression: "Help me escape from Cuba" Family values: "and find a home in the USA" Symbolism "I had a powerful boat" ....and, of course, because the band were upstanding male citizens, the potential asylum seekers were "a beautiful girl and her brother who was in great pain" (he conveniently dies before becoming a statistic)...awww - I'm surprised they stopped short of a formal statement over the non-instrumental section. However, age 14, I merely tuned in to the human drama of the situation, and thought it was a good tune, sounding like a tough Jay & The Americans. Escape From Cuba (L.Kusik - R.Adams), arranged by Leroy Glover Produced by Dennis Lambert for Don Costa Prods. Inc. .... in musica for evaluation. Phil PS - remind me not to go fishing off the coast of Florida. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
