    Hi All!

I had an interesting experience at lunchtime today. My
local Wendy's apparently subscribes to an oldies format
music service. Now, whoever does the programming for this
does an interesting job- in the short time I was there, I
heard The Buckinghams' "Susan" and Stevie Wonder's
Yestermem Yesteryou...". But the real knockout was hearing
Bobby Rydell's "Swinging School"! I can't help but wonder
if this is a sign that the Cameo/Parkway vaults are
finally opening- I can't imagine a music service playing
one of those semi-boot Park CDs...

I recently came across a video of a UK variety show from
    mid 60s (I Guess) called T J`S. This episode features DC5
and a Phil Spector cameo, there is also a "video" of DC5
and Phil at his Hollywood mansion running around and
hiding from screaming girl fans to the tune of Catch Us If
You Can. The most amazing aspect of the show is the ending
theme song "Down At TJ`S". Sung and produced by Phil, it is
a great wall of sound production. Does anyone have any more
info on this obscure (to me) show and more to the point...
the "coulda been a hit all on it`s own" theme song?

    Thanks

A friend of mine told me of visiting Rodney on the ROQ's
home recently, and being shown an unpublished (?) photo of
Rodney, Manson, and Brian Wilson. Doesn't really mean
anything, but I was still a little surprised to hear of it,
having assumed only Dennis hung out with him.

"Home of the Brave" is one of my favorite-ever records for
sure, but I've also always loved the somewhat less
well-known ("it is in fact a fact well-known") Parade
    single "She Sleeps Alone."

    Hi Jerry,

Welcome to the Spectropop list! I've been a huge fan of
The Parade since 1981, when I happened upon a copy of
"Frog Prince". After that, I sought out and found almost
all of The Parade 45s. I tried very hard to contact A&M
regarding the circumstances upon which the album hadn't
been released, but got nowhere. Thank God for the Parade
    CD on A&M Japan.

I have a question: is the S. Margolin listed as co-writer
on some of The Parade tracks actually Stuart Margolin, the
actor? If so, did he play any role in the recordings?

    Thanks a bunch!

Most of this is untrue. Phil did give me the song though.
I was the first producer in what was to be a "stable" of
producers Philip wanted to build up. He heard a record I
made with Larry Levine at Gold Star with Clydie King
singing a song of mine called The Thrill is Gone. It was a
blatant imitation of Phil's sound but a pretty good one. He
hired me for his stable but he'd never let me cut anything.
I played piano or percussion and worked with the background
singers on his sessions and was often the contractor (he
would pay me this way). I got fed up with waiting and said
so, and he said here...here's a hit song. He gave me Home
    of the Brave...

I thought it was really dumb but it was hook city, and he
finally let me do a date. I wrote the arrangement myself...
very slowly...on paper; mostly the bass line and chords
and turnarounds etc. Nick Decaro wrote out some other
parts that I would sing to him. I don't remember the chart
that well anymore having not heard it in 25 years or so.

There never was a Ronettes version as far as I know. He
would have mentioned that. When it became a hit he acted
as if HE made the record in a Gavin interview and he
surely would have mentioned a Ronettes arrangement at that
point. I was amazed at how he was acting and I've been told
there are some compilations out there without my credits.
He wasn't even there when I cut it but he did give me the
song and I did steal his sound as best I could.

The interesting one is Phil singing a song I wrote called
Fly Away. He wanted to be an artist and we recorded it at
Gold Star. I sang it on the tracking date but he did do a
vocal. That would be something to hear!

    Later,
    Jerry Riopelle

TOBIAS - You got a great deal on that Association album.
Now for a bit of trivia...(I was there)

Bones Howe produced the album and was credited, but no
other credits were given for a lot of '60s reasons', which
I won't go into here. I was the vocal arranger, Ray Pohlman
did the rhythm track arrangements and Bill Holman did
orchestra sweetening. I co-wrote "Like Always", along with
Larry Ramos and Tony Ortega. That info HAD to be listed on
the album, because of publishing rules.

On the rhythm tracks...Hal Blaine: drums, Joe Osborne:
bass, Larry Knechtel: piano and organ, Mike Dasey: lead
guitar. Some of the additional rhythm guitars were done by
members of The Association. Forgive me if some of this is
not completely accurate (and the spelling of names). It's
    been a long long time.

This was my first arranging assignment after moving to LA
in 1967, and it was pretty exciting for me, especially
rehearsing the guys and hearing all that great harmony
surrounding me while I played piano for them. It was Bones'
last album for them, but I continued on doing some movie
things for them, as well as additional album cuts and
singles. Larry and Russ Gigure are still traveling with a
'regrouped' Association, and they sound better then ever.

I recently purchased a CD version (from Japan) for $15.00,
so you made out very well.

My initial guess, proved correct when I looked it up in
"You Can't Do That: Beatles Bootlegs and Novelty Records":

SWANS The Boys With the Beatle Hair/Please Hurry Home
    Cameo 302.

The entry says "The Swans made the charts in March 1964.
They remained on the charts for four weeks, hitting number
    85."

I have it on CD on a Japanese disc called "Bravo! Beatles:
The Beatles Relations", a collection of tribute discs.
(Number is AZ-5009) Cher's "Ringo I Love You," a punk
sounding song way way before it's time, is also on it.

To Carol Kaye (hi Carol...long time, no talk to...): Just
wondering...did you play on "Ringo, I Love You?" If so,
you know offhand who else was on it?

    Pismo Beach, huh...:)

    Dear Claudia:

The group was called The Swans and it was produced by
Jerry Ross and released on Cameo in 1964. Its on the
Sequel Records (UK) CD called "Slow Fizz - Here Come The
Girls Vol. 9". I think it's a fun song too, and much better
than some of the other Beatlemania songs I have heard. (Ex:
The Carefrees "We Love You Beatles")

Claudia - The track in question was recorded by THE SWANS
and came out on CAMEO in 1964. Produced by the legendary
JERRY ROSS and written by Ross & KENNY GAMBLE (plus
RENZETTI & JACKSON) it reached No. 85 on the Billboard top
    100. The SWANS also sung back-ups on fab girl combo The
SAPPHIRES recordings. Track is available on CD - HERE COME
THE GIRLS VOL. 9 - SLOW FIZZ - THE JERRY ROSS GIRL GROUPS.

    Hope this helps.

The Swans! I take cream and sugar, and where is Pismo
    Beach anyway, heh heh.

The Swans' version can be found on Here Comes the Girls
Vol 9 or 10, I forget which. It was produced by Jerry Ross,
as were all the other songs on that cd. Beautiful song
indeed, but the Swans only recorded two singles to my
knowledge "He's Mine b/w Better Be A Good Girl Now" in
1963, and "The Boy With The Beatle Hair," in 1964. They
also backed up the Sapphires on many of their Ross
recordings. Anyone who hasn't heard this song should, it
was a cool piece of GG pop that actually charted in early
    1964.
